We don't get much snow down here - never has a child walked to school on top of snow that had covered hedges like we did back in the dark ages! However, it doesn't always go to plan. About a couple of inches fell - nothing much really. Then it turned to a bit of rain and then stopped. I took Eva out about 4 o'clock and it had been melting. Then the temperature lurched to below zero, and suddenly wet and soggy turned to ice and black ice! Frightened of slipping or Eva pulling me over I turned back, trying to pick my way safely in the dark.

I didn't get round to making mince pies, but I did treat the jar of mincemeat to a little brandy!!

OH should have been going to wood turning club tonight for the first time in many months. He was really looking forward to it, but he decided a 15 mile drive across the Forest in icy conditions wasn't worth it.

Still, the wood burner is giving out cosy warmth and I've got a chicken casserole in the oven, so a comfortable night in will be some consolation.

Oma, congratulations to your Great Niece and the baby's Daddy. I hope everything goes smoothly for them after waiting so long. Your MIL will always provide some entertainment - I laughed out loud at the "are you sure it's sausage" comment - and your appropriate reply!! Oh dear, the alarm needs to be surgically attached to her.

Oma , how lovely about the baby. It's nice to hear some good news. And June is a lovely birthday month, as we know

I'm very glad you and Eva made it safely home Daisy! The log burner and chicken casserole will be most welcome I'm sure.

I hope you start to feel better soon Plant.

Little E didn't seem too bad today. He ate well and was happy, with just a little bit of a cough.I gave him an early lunch and Calpol and he slept for 3 hours and woke happy. Yesterday at nursery he only had half an hour and it seemed to put him out of sorts for the rest of the day.

It has been extremely cold all day and I wasn't sorry that I didn't need to go out.

Nanto, It's supposed to be 1C here, but feels much colder. It sounds as though you will be going back to that refurbished pub again. What did you have to eat?

Good Friday morning, everyone. It's still below freezing here, although it should get a bit warmer later. Our local roads are like a big skating rink. We've got visitors coming this morning, and we're supposed to be going out for lunch, but if it doesn't thaw I think we'll be eating here!

Nanto, your musical friend seems to be playing a jolly tune - we need that this morning.

Gem, you've reminded me I need to get my hair cut! Enjoy your leisurely day and stay warm. xx

Oma, B sounds just like my hubby. He can rectify things and mend things.

Still very cold here, even though we have got sunshine.

Daisy, hope you can get/go out for lunch. Beats cooking.

My OH is the Fixer that people turn to as well! Oma and Nan2!

We bought new wiper blades for my car this afternoon and OH fitted the front ones. The back one looks more complicated so she's going to try over the weekend. If not it's back to the shop and have them fit them for £3. We picked up our repeat prescriptions while we were out.

No GS2 today due to an after school thing. However I am watching GS1 at theirs at the moment as DD had some work emergency needing her to go into the office. I don't think she will be too long.
OH and I have decided to have fish and chips tonight.

4 degrees now and sunny, but it feels cold!

Nanto, I have been off my food for some days but that description of your meal tickled my taste buds. Do you layer the corned beef, pots etc. I haven’t had corned beef for years.

I am determined that I will report tomorrow that I am feeling better.

Yes Plant, i do layer the potatoes, then onion, then corned beef, until the slow cooker is full.
Hope you do feel a bit better tomorrow.

3 lots of todays dinner haver gone in the freezer.

Neighbour came over and when he was going,we were stood at the gate chatting, and it didn't feel as cold as it did earlier.

Plant, I hope you managed to eat something warming and nutritious tonight. It's true what Oma says, when you feel like that you don't know what you fancy, and don't feel like making it anyway. Have you got some good pre-made or ready meals in your freezer so you've only got to defrost and reheat it?

Nanto, I'm glad it's warmed up a bit for you. I'm just wondering, do you put the corned beef in sliced or just sort of crumble it up? Do you put any gravy or anything in with it?

Oma, you didn't get much sleep again if you were up at 4 am. You must be so tired. I get the impression your SIL is always very busy, and he's such a hard-working chap, but I suppose everybody wants their new carpet or flooring in for Christmas. It must be manic. It's good of B to help him out with the jobs at home. Is the shelf ok now? And the lamp?

Gem, your three lovely boys keep you busy! I know your GD is much more independent now she's older, but you probably share other interests with her? Did GS2 enjoy his after school event? Let's face it, 4C isn't exactly balmy warm, but better than it has been. I hope S can fit the rear wiper to save you a trip to the shop where you got them. My OH is also a Fixer, so it's quite a novelty at the moment that our next door neighbour is also a Fixer but in slightly different skill areas. They share jobs, tools and expertise and sometimes do jobs together which they both enjoy - and it's got nothing to do with the glasses of wine they usually relax with afterwards! . How were the fish and chips?

We've had a lovely day, despite the weather. Our friends arrived about 10.30 and the main roads were ok, the Forest roads weren't so good, but not too bad. The snow and ice didn't start melting until after lunch today, and there's still quite a bit lying around. We did toasted crumpets with our coffee - the first we'd had this winter. We decided to go to a pub in the next village for lunch (so I didn't have to dig out the chicken casserole from the freezer). It was very busy, but we'd forgotten it was Friday and always a busy time round here. I usually have sausage and mash at this pub because they get their sausages from their local butcher and they are always delicious. Our friends both had fish and chips and they were good too. They left about 4 o'clock because they were anxious to get back on to main roads before it went dark - they live about ¾ hour away.

We just had a sandwich for tea and I still feel full.
