August 1st is 'Yorkshire Day' - to promote the historic English county.
It was celebrated in 1975, by the Yorkshire Ridings Society, initially in Beverley, as a protest movement against the Local Government re-organisation of 1974.
The date alludes to the Battle of Minden (1759) and it is also the anniversary of the emancipation of slaves in the British Empire in 1834, for which a Yorkshire MP, William Wilberforce, had campaigned.

Gem - Yorkshire Day has made me wonder if other counties have 'Days' to promote them?

When I was little I thought the pips were the same number as the hour - 6 pips = 6 o'clock, but it was always 6!

Gem - I remember that summer so well. It was frightening to think water was going to be turned off and there would be just a standpipe in the village we lived in. OH was working away, my mum was in Canada and I did't know how I'd cope with getting water from half a mile away with a toddler and a baby in tow. We didn't even have disposable nappies to turn to! I've never been so glad to see rain when it eventually started.

It was so hot wasn't it Daisy!
I bet we all have our memories of that summer.
Picture me, 22, living in HOT Sussex, in a caravan, with a baby (she was born in February) We had to vacate our home all day as it was so hot in there!!
I had to use disposable nappies as we only had the launderette a few miles away for washing. They were rubbish!
