It seems an awful waste of resources, but I don't suppose JCB mind too much!

1883 The Victoria hall theatre panic in Sunderland resulting in the deaths of 183 children ,
At the end of the show and announcement was made that children with certain tickets would receive a prize on exit
Many of the 1,100 children in the gallery stampeded towards the staircase leading downstairs.
Those in front became trapped and crushed by the crowd behind them.

We have a memorial in our towns park dedicated to this sad event.

OMG that sounds horrendous. I've just looked up when general anaesthetics were developed, and it seems to be about 20 years or so before Dr Lister's surgery on his sister. They seemed to use Ether, Nitrous Oxide and Chloroform, so at least the poor lady should have been unconscious. I remember reading somewhere that Queen Victoria was one of the first women to have pain relief when she was giving birth. They still use Nitrous Oxide for childbirth, and I had it when I had a bone biopsy a couple of months ago. I got very giggly!
