Daisy in the upper years at grammar school we could go into town (5 to 10 minute walk) in pairs at lunch time.
We had to sign out, with a valid reason.

You were lucky, Gem. Our school was perched at the top of a hill with no shops or anything within walking distance.

I bet nobody ever forgot their mother's birthdays though!

I'm sure J. K. could have had no idea just how successful and popular her Harry Potter books would become. I didn't realise it was quite so long ago, though.

By the time we got a television I was too old for Andy Pandy programmes, but still watched them sometimes. Children's television was very basic!

We've recorded the current programmes - it seems a long time ago now, but I suppose 40 years is quite a long time.

Winston Churchill introduced his 'V for Victory" campaign which rapidly spread through Europe. The BBC took the first four notes of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, which matched the dot-dot-dot-dash Morse code for the letter V, and played it before news bulletins.

Churchill had a gift for catching the attention and imagination of the people, and of course so many of his iconic speeches are still remembered.
