You have to admire their spirit of adventure and initiative, don't you! We were never allowed to leave the school premises at lunch time unless we actually went home for lunch, which very few girls did.

Daisy in the upper years at grammar school we could go into town (5 to 10 minute walk) in pairs at lunch time.
We had to sign out, with a valid reason.

You were lucky, Gem. Our school was perched at the top of a hill with no shops or anything within walking distance.
