              Gem - I remember the excitement at school when this happened. I couldn't understand the fuss - I lived in a sweet shop but don't like sweets!!

                  Very few people had tv in those days and most people heard the news on radio - or in the following day's papers.

                  I can remember seeing a newsreel in the cinema shortly afterwards with Her Majesty climbing the steps of the plane to fly back to the UK. She was wearing a black, coat and a black hat, and I can remember wondering how she knew to take a mourning outfit with her! I was about 9!!

                                Gem, I cant' ever remember my mum saying don't use too much soap when you have a wash!!

                                I remember that she used to chop us Fairy hard soap in to the copper for boiling the whites.
