New laws came in force in England and Wales allowing 'round-the-clock drinking'.

I remember the outcry at this. There would be drunks in the streets all day.
As far as I know none of the pubs around here remain open after 11pm, although only small ones close during the afternoon for a few hours . I'm not sure about other areas.

Wasn't it supposed to encourage the 'cafe culture'? Whatever that is! It was a very strange piece of legislation.

              1952
The play, The Mousetrap by Agatha Christie, opened in London, at the Ambassador's Theatre where it remained for 21 years. By Saturday 12th April 1958 it had become the longest running production of any kind in the history of British Theatre.

Still running, in a smaller London theatre, and also on tour.
I saw it when it came here, I have seen better Agatha Christies!

                1987
A young man in Somerset tried seven times to kill himself following a row with his girlfriend. He threw himself in front of four cars, and jumped under the wheels of a lorry. He tried to strangle himself and jumped from a window. The real victims were a driver of one car who suffered a heart attack, a policeman who injured his back trying to restrain the man, and a doctor who was kicked in the face when the struggling man reached hospital

Good grief! All those poor people. I wonder what happened to the young man in the end?

Clover - I agree. It's an obscene amount of money for a car.
