Remember that long, hot summer? On 1st September as the water shortages worsened, standpipes were being erected in places where water reservoirs were at their lowest level. In some places water was being turned off for up to 6 hours a day and business were also facing restrictions.
I was living in a tiny village in Bedfordshire, and my OH had just been moved with his job so was away Sunday-Friday each week. The standpipe was in the middle of the village with no proper footpaths and I had no idea how I was going to carry buckets of water with a baby and a toddler in tow. Fortunately, the rains came and the standpipes were never needed, but it made me appreciate the luxury of turning a tap on and lovely clear water coming out of it.
