That must have been the earliest recorded form of lockdown then! I wonder how they spread the word without any modern forms of communication?

            1969

British rower John Fairfax arrived at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, after becoming the first person to row across the Atlantic alone. He had left the Canary Islands on January 20th in a 24’ rowing boat and after 180 days and 4000 miles he had finished his journey.
Three years later, with his girl friend, he rowed the 8000 miles from San Francisco to the Hayman Islands off the Queensland Coast.

Gem, that must have been a very perilous journey without the level of communications we have now. The son of a friend of ours did that crossing some years ago. I think he was the second youngest to achieve it at that time. He did extensive preparations beforehand, both for the boat and for his physical and mental health. Even today, it's still an incredible achievement, and he raised over ÂŖ20,000 for charity in the process.

The policy was to have 50% of youngsters educated to first degree level, but in fact students are turning away from Uni because they don't want to be saddled with thousands of pounds worth of debt.
