I bet none of us can imagine going back to tiny B&W tvs, with fuzzy sound and flickering screens.

Thousands of shops throughout England and Wales opened legally for the first time on a Sunday, following a change in the Sunday trading laws.

Gem, I remember when shops used to be able to open any hours they wanted, then it was stopped in (I think) 1950 when there were so many restrictions on Sunday trading that most shops closed. I think the oft-quoted example was you could buy a newspaper on a Sunday, but not a Bible!! We've come full circle now with 7-day trading.

              1997

Diana, Princess of Wales, her companion Dodi Fayed, and their driver were killed in a car crash in the Place de l'Alma underpass in Paris, France.
Tests conducted by French police indicated that the driver was intoxicated, may have been travelling at over 100 mph and likely caused the accident while trying to escape the paparazzi photographers.

Such a terrible sad day. Those poor boys

It will always be one of those events that we will remember where and how we heard this unbelievably awful news. A bit like Kennedy's assassination, the attack on the twin towers, the Hillsborough stadium disaster and other disasters that rocked our world.

We will all remember that day,
Although I disliked Dianna it was a tragic waste of life and her poor boys losing their beloved mother like that .
No one deserves to die in those circumstances do they.

A lot of us grieved for a long time, even though we didn't know her. For the loss of her young life, and those poor boys.

I wonder if it should have been left in peace as the final resting place of so many people.

                              1994

Entertainer and television presenter Roy Castle died from lung cancer at his Buckinghamshire home, just two days after his sixty second birthday. He was a lifelong non-smoker and blamed his illness on years of playing the trumpet in smoky jazz clubs.
His widow, Fiona, worked with the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation for many years after her husband's death. She was a key figure in campaigning for the British smoking ban which came into effect during 2007 and has seen smoking banned in virtually all enclosed public places.

I really admire people like Fiona Castle who turn a personal tragedy into a worthwhile campaign.
