A lot of people took up that offer. I always remember my Mum saying that her uncle and family emigrated under that scheme. I suppose it was the beginning of what were called the £10-Poms.

English trainer Jenny Pitman became the first woman to train the winner of the Grand National (Corbiere) at Aintree, Liverpool.

I have hardly ever bet on horses but had a small bet on this race. I liked the name Corbiere, and it was trained by a woman so I chose that. I won the princely sum of £8, with which I bought some shoes!

Gem, DS2 was at junior school and they organsied a trip to see Cats. We were so lucky because we and another family were given seats on the moving platform which the children thought was so cool - and I have to admit I was thrilled as well.
