I think it's unlikely that our late Queen's record of service to the country will ever be surpassed.

I'm sure it won't Daisy. I think we are very lucky to have lived during her reign

        1943

        Britain discontinued printing £1,000 notes.

I didn't know there were such things, and imagine how much they were worth in those days!!

I never knew either! I remember how large the white £5 notes were (huge!) and I can't help wondering if the size of the £1,000 note was correspondingly bigger than the £5!!

Gem, I remember when my DS2 was a child I carefully avoided him finding out that Shakespeare died on his birthday. He would have been devastated and felt it would have cast sadness on his own birthday.

I mentioned this to OH yesterday and he said at the beginning of WWII thousands of counterfeit £1,000 were dropped over Britain to try and destabilise the economy. As we often say, you live and learn!

                          1953

Two Cambridge University scientists published their answer to how living things reproduced. In an article published in Nature magazine, James D Watson and Francis Crick described the structure of a chemical called deoxyribonucleic acid, or DNA. Their achievement was recognized in 1962 when they received the Nobel Prize for Physiology.

That discovery transformed so many things, didn't it. Now we take the knowledge of DNA for granted.

                              1828

The opening of the London Zoological Gardens in Regent's Park, London. Lady visitors were politely requested to refrain from poking the beasts through the bars of the cages.

OK for men and children to poke them however???
