They were special. In my world as a child you didn't see many of them, and I can remember my Dad bringing in one from our shop just to show me what they looked like. It was huge, and quite thin paper and looked more like a legal document than a bank note!

                1805

Master Betty (William Betty) played Hamlet on the London stage, aged just 14. He was such a success that the House of Commons was adjourned to enable members to watch his performance. His success was short-lived and, not long afterwards, he was hissed off the stage.

Gem, I think audiences in those days must have been quite intolerant! I suppose that type of audience participation lives on in the panto traditions!

The comic strip character Dennis the Menace appeared in the Beano for the first time. His red and black striped jumper did not feature until a few weeks later and his pet dog Gnasher did not make an appearance until 31st August 1968.

I loved Dennis the Menace - he had such a devil may care attitude and I would never have dared to be as naughty as he was!

That wasn't a howling success then, as the Lords are still with us in every increasing numbers.

                            2020

Day one of the closure of all the UK's cafes, pubs and restaurants (except for take-away food) in an effort to combat coronavirus. All nightclubs, betting shops, casinos, theatres, cinemas, gyms and leisure centres were also told to close as soon as they reasonably could. The government said the situation would be reviewed each month and that it would pay 80% of wages (up to £2,500 a month) for employees who were not able to work.

Oma, it does seem a long time ago, but look how much has changed as a consequence of Covid and the lockdowns. Some good, but not all of it by any means.
