Thieves who had built a 50ft (15m) tunnel to a cash machine on Liverpool Road, Eccles, got away with more than £80,000. The complex nature of its structure could have taken months to excavate and echoes a similar raid in Fallowfield Shopping Precinct in January 2012. Police said they were looking for 'people acting suspiciously, possibly covered in soil.'“A grandchild fills a space in your heart that you never knew was empty.” – Unknown

Gem - that reminds me of a student on work experience at a bank (in the days when every high street had banks!). She'd been asked to load the ATM with cash. As she was doing this someone outside put their card in the machine and startled her and she screamed. The customer out in the street screamed in alarm as well. You really don't expect to get told off by a cash machine do you!

The Torrey Canyon oil tanker, with a cargo of 100,000 gallons of crude oil, ran aground on rocks between Land's End and the Scilly Isles and its cargo discharged into the sea. The RAF and the Royal Navy were called in to napalm bomb the slick in an attempt to reduce the risk of pollution. In the weeks that followed the accident, oil escaped and spread along the shores of the south coast of England and the Normandy coast of France. Worst hit were the Cornish beaches of Marazion and Prah Sands, where sludge was up to a foot deep.“A grandchild fills a space in your heart that you never knew was empty.” – Unknown

Day one of the government 'lockdown' of Britain to try and curb the coronavirus epidemic. Yesterday evening's announcement from Prime Minister Boris Johnson ordered people to stay at home, except for shopping for basic necessities, daily exercise, any medical need and for travelling to and from essential work for an initial period of three weeks. Shops selling non-essential goods were told to shut and gatherings in public of more than two people who do not live together were prohibited. The public were warned that if they did not follow the rules, police would have the powers to enforce them, including through fines and dispersing gatherings.“A grandchild fills a space in your heart that you never knew was empty.” – Unknown
