I'd just arrived back from Australia to sort out the house , which we'd bought before we went, so that we could let it out. I spent the night in a hotel in Dedham watching dustbins etc being blown down the road. In the morning we couldn't phone out, but OH managed to get thorough from OZ! No mobiles in those days! The forests in the Aldeburgh area were devastated, but it was good to see how quickly they've re-established themselves.

Our old house, a wooden framed farmhouse, had a beautiful walnut tree growing at the side. It was thought that the roots were helping to support that side of the house. The tree came down sadly. I often wondered what effect it had on the house.
