That was amazing. In a way you think someone would have done that years ago - 1899 perhaps - but it's a huge challenge, and I should think they needed all the help they could get from modern technology, weather forecasts etc."Joy is what happens to us when we allow ourselves to recognise how good things really are. Alcatraz prison in San Francisco Bay closes down and transfers its last prisoners.
At it’s peak period of use in 1950s, “The Rock," or "America’s Devil Island" housed over 200 inmates at the maximum-security facility. Alcatraz remains an icon of American prisons for its harsh conditions and record for being inescapable.
The twelve-acre rocky island, one and a half miles from San Francisco, featured the most advanced security of the time. Some of the first metal detectors were used at Alcatraz. Strict rules were enforced against the unfortunate inmates who had to do time at Alcatraz. Nearly complete silence was mandated at all times.

We sailed round Alcatraz in a relatively small motor boat, and the currents between the island and the mainland were ferocious. You wouldn't have a chance of swimming through them. It looked gloomy, sad and menacing.

The Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race on the River Thames ended in a dead heat. Legend in Oxford has it that the judge, 'Honest John' Phelps, was asleep under a bush when the race finished, leading him to announce the result as a 'dead heat to Oxford by four feet'.“A grandchild fills a space in your heart that you never knew was empty.” – Unknown
