Awww. There's been considerable interest in our area in a tiny kitten. She was about 2 weeks old. An HGV driver spotted her on the middle lane of the M27, stopped and got out to rescue her. He took her to a friend who took her into our vets. No-one has any idea how such a little mite got there, unless she'd been taken and dropped by a bird of prey. She became quite a media celebrity and one of the nurses hand-reared her and finally she went to her furever home with one of the vets.

I'm not sure how many of her 9 lives she's already used up, but she's certainly landed on all 4 paws.

    Here's the story:

I know - her chances of surviving in the middle of the motorway must have been close to nil, without even thinking about how she got to be there in the first place. Plus it was raining off and on quite heavily and she was cold and wet, poor little thing.

          1924

The last sighting of English climbers George Mallory and Andrew Irvine; 800 feet from the summit of Mount Everest during the third attempt to become the first men to conquer the world's highest mountain. Their fate was unknown for 75 years, until Mallory's body was discovered in 1999 by an expedition that had set out to search for the climbers' remains. Whether or not Mallory and Irvine reached the summit before they died remains a subject of speculation and continuing research.

Gem - I didn't know that's how the LSO came into being.

                  1889

Seventy eight people were killed and 260 injured, almost a third of them children, in the Armagh rail disaster in Northern Ireland. A crowded Sunday school excursion train had to negotiate a steep incline but the steam locomotive was unable to complete the climb and the train stalled. The crew divided the train but the rear portion ran back down the gradient and collided with a following train. It was the worst rail disaster in the UK in the nineteenth century, and remains Ireland`s worst ever railway disaster.

How dreadful - all those children lost on what should have been an exciting day out for them.

Wow, that was probably quite a controversial decision!

The opening of Peasholm Park in Scarborough, the vision of Harry Smith, Borough Engineer from 1897 - 1933. Underneath the lake lie the remains of a medieval manor, once owned by the future King Richard III. The layout was designed to echo the Willow Pattern china plate of 1780. In 1999 Peasholm was included on the English Heritage Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.

I have been there many times throughout my life and had no idea of this story! Neither had OH.
