      Thanks Gem. That's really interesting.

A German monoplane dropped a single bomb on Dover, the first ever to be dropped on British soil. It landed on a rectory garden lawn and blew out the house windows.

Not a good thing to happen on Christmas Eve.

Definitely not a good start to Christmas that year. It's a good job people didn't know what was to come just 25 years later.

It was horrific - my BIL and SIL were survivors of it.

Gem - I remember adding those Acts of Parliament to our Business Studies syllabus at college!

Donald Campbell, 46 year old son of Sir Malcolm Campbell, died in his attempt to break his own world water speed record on Coniston Water in the Lake District.
His boat, Bluebird K7, somersaulted at high speed, and Campbell died instantly and is buried in Coniston graveyard.
The wreckage of Campbell's craft was recovered by the Bluebird Project between October 2000, when the first sections were raised, and June 2001 when Campbell's body was recovered. It is intended to return a rebuilt Bluebird to Coniston before permanently housing her at the nearly Ruskin museum

It was set up in 1804 as a goods railway running from Swansea to Mumbles Head, Wales, and began carrying passengers in 1807. The railway still holds the record for the highest number of forms of traction of any railway in the world - horse-drawn, sail power, steam power, electric power, petrol and diesel.

If only we'd preserved our railways, I'm sure we would have less congestion on our roads these days.
