    Vegetarian lard substitute

I make my shortcrust pastry half stork margarine and half lard
Because we have vegetarians in the family and I have a problem with beef products I use a vegetable based lard alternative.

The last two Christmases I bought mince pies, before that I always made them. This year I am making them again. I used to use a fat called Pura, or Trex.

It seems that Pura is no more, and we are having trouble finding any Trex!!

I will keep searching. What do you use to make pastry?

I use half Stork (block) and half Lard, as we've no vegetarians. Do any of the supermarkets have an own brand vegetarian fat, I wonder.

I've never tried using oil instead, but here's a recipe, although I wonder if it would be viable with a 'better' type of oil - nut rather than seed-based.

With just three store cupboard ingredients, you can make this cheap and easy vegan pastry in no time at all.

I get my Trex from Sainsbury's Gem,

I'm sure I have seen it in Morrisons also.
I can't say I have seen Pura though

        Thanks everyone

OH has looked in both the very big Sainsbury's and our small local one and they didn't have any.
        I will keep looking!

Gem, I've just checked Sainsbury online and found this:

It seems to be in stock and can be frozen. Is that a viable substitute for Trex? It may be more of a veggie "butter" than lard though.

                    That's a relief, Gem.

I will have to make mince pies this year, as you have all invested time in helping me source the cooking fat

Gem, yes of course you will. And lots of them, too. I really fancied a mince pie with a cup of tea this afternoon after shopping. I'll have to get on with making some. I usually make an extra dozen and pop them in the freezer for New Year.

I've just thought about the mincemeat. Can you get a vegetarian version?

We don't have lard here at all, I will have a look in the supermarket to see what they all have.
