Gem, I can sympathise. I suppose when you start smoking you've no idea of the damage it might do to you in ways you can't even imagine - and I'm sure it must be really difficult to give up. I'm glad I've never smoked.

Oma - a huge well-done to your sister, giving up like that. Does she feel better for it - as well as richer!

My mother smoked and hearing her coughing was enough to put anyone off. I hated it, did try one but thought it was a dirty habit. I can't understand young girls today, they know the dangers, they spend lots of money on their appearance and then stink of smoke.

        Very true Plant!

Daisy when my mum started smoking at around 21, it was considered positively beneficial!
Do you remember those early episodes of Call The Midwife, when both doctors and nurses were smoking at work??!

A friend of my OH put all the nicotine patches on in one go. Apparently he seemed to be punch drunk!

Shem - oh, my goodness, he must have had nicotine overload.

Gem, when my DS1 was born you were allowed to smoke on the hospital ward, and I was in a small room with one other new mum and she had about 10 visitors the first night - all puffing away! It's hard to believe now, isn't it!

Yuk! I smoked in my teens but gave it up when I married. OH went cold turkey when he gave up 22 years ago. DD1 vapes. No one else smokes in our family, but I remember when all my family smoked in the 60s. It was the done thing! We must have stunk.
OH tried hypnosis, patches etc. Nothing worked. The only way was the hard way.

My OH smoked until he was 50. He took the dog out late one night and was apparently gazing up at the night sky and decided to stop smoking and he did, just like that. He had tried a few times before but was so foul tempered that I told him to start smoking again.

My Mum and Dad both smoked though he could quite casually stop for a long period, smoke for a while, then stop. Quite often he smoked a pipe. Can’t remember the last time I saw anyone smoking a pipe. Would guess it was even more risky than cigarettes.

Now you come to mention it Shem, I haven't seen anyone smoke a pipe for as long as I can remember. I wonder if it's gone out of fashion?

I stopped smoking in my late 30s...cold turkey. Haven't looked back since. I kept a pkt of cigarettes on my bedside cabinet too. Somehow it helped. I'm the world's worst if anyone lights up near me. Yuk.😉

My OH, who stopped smoking 10 or 11 years ago, still likes the smell of other people's cigarettes if she smells one when we are out. I think that is quite unusual.
I have never smoked and hate the smell, especially when it gets onto my hair and clothes.

Shem and Nana - when we were away in the caravan a couple of weeks ago, the man in the van opposite was smoking a pipe. His wife wouldn't let him in the van with it, though!

My OH usually would enjoy a cigar at Christmas, he had been a smoker and at times smoked a pipe. My DS smokes small cigars, I wish he didn't.

I must admit I quite like the smell of cigarettes when they are being smoked but definitely don’t like the smell once it goes stale. Stopped seeing so much of one friend as she insisted on meeting at her house and would smoke several cigarettes whilst having coffee. My clothes and hair would stink and eventually it was just too much hassle. Odd that we grew up with cigarette smoke and didn’t notice it at all.
