Gem - I totally agree with you about full term babies. Babies will feed-sleep-feed whenever they want. They soon let you know when they're ready for another feed, whether it's 2, 3 or 4 hours. As Oma says, if the baby's bringing up a supplementary feed he didn't need it anyway.

It sounds as though your DD3 has plenty of milk and is doing a grand job. xx

DD2 reported back that all seemed much calmer in the DD3 household today.
They had split the night time shift and had a calm day today. She called in late afternoon for DD and GS2 to meet the baby.

Baby has now gained sufficient weight that they have oficial permission to breast feed him when he needs it and don't have to feed him religiously every three hours or express and give bottles, unless they choose.
It will make life much easier.

DD and SIL's uni friend who has just qualified as a midwife is staying with them for a few days, so that can only be a bonus

DD developed a blocked milk duct yesterday. It is still very painful this morning and she says feeding baby is agony.
I do hope it clears and no infection sets in.

Gem, poor DD3. That must be really sore. I hope it clears up quickly. Is she drinking enough water in this hot weather?

                  Sending hugs. xx

Well the blockage turned to infection over the weekend, which was what I feared, having suffered the same thing myself when DD1 was a baby.
DD had to wait until Monday but saw a Dr yesterday morning and has antibiotics. It is still hot and painful but the fever is improving today.

They had a midwife appointment after the Dr and they say baby is falling too low on the weight scale again. So, more supplementary feeds and expressing. He is feeding well and DD has a good milk supply. I think there is too much emphasis put on the damned charts.

I feel DD3 is near the end of her tether.
I was to go over today after the GC had gone.
However last night it was sounding as though she just wanted a day to themselves, so I said I was happy to go, but totally understood the need for free time.
They had a friend staying for a couple of days, then DD's dad and OH visiting , then SIL's parents the next day. I think DD felt overwhelmed by it all with everything that is going on. I think a quiet day for them is a good idea.

I am planning to go tomorrow afternoon, but said I will confirm with DD in the morning to see that she is OK with it.

DD must be feeling really fed up.

Gemini, your poor daughter, I hope the antibiotics kick in soon. Perhaps your DD should keep away from those midwives.

I wish she could Plant. They are making them take the baby in regularly for weighing.

It is all too much for the poor parents Gem. I remember L, he had to go into the hospital and get his tongue clipped? as he wasn't sucking as he should, with GD2 in the hospital at the time for the breast infection she then decided no more breast feeding!

Lizzie, sometimes that is the right decision.

I have told DD3 I totally support whatever she decided to do regarding breast feeding.
I hope once this latest setback is sorted out it will be plain sailing for her. She's very keen to breastfeed, but as we know life sometimes throws things in our way and we have to adapt.
She knows I am a keen advocate of breast feeding so I wanted her to know I would be in no way disapproving or disappointed if she did have to give up.

Gem - I feel so sorry for DD3. I hope the infection clears up quickly, but agree - there is so much emphasis on targets and charts these days. And yet she had to wait until Monday to get antibiotics when we all know the sooner you start them the quicker they act. I wonder if there's been any research connecting expressing milk (for whatever reason) with blocked ducts?

Your poor DD certainly needs a bit of peace and quiet, but I'm sure the one person she does want to see is her mum.

I hope for her sake she can carry on breast feeding. I remember when I had DS2 it was the only time I sat down and properly relaxed, with no feeling of guilt or thinking I "should" be doing something else.
