Qwerty, it took my granddaughter a long time to get used to the shorter time she has at our house after school, having been used to a full day since she was a few weeks old.
Ir sounds as though you need some sort of big trolley to move both kids and all their stuff to the car πβA grandchild fills a space in your heart that you never knew was empty.β β Unknown

So pleased that they're ok Qwerty. We have school pick up for GS2 on Thursday then again next Monday for GS1, who lives much further away. Not been asked before but mummy has a hospital appointment & friends can't help this time. New experience for us."Good friends help you to find important things when you have lost them....your smile, your hope, and your courage."

The thing is to put letters, cardigans and water bottles in their school bags before setting off, if they have a rucksack, and get them to wear them, then you will have both hands free for the children. Unless it is too hot for coats, then they will give you those too

Qwerty - the stuff young children have to take and bring home from school these days is the bane of my life. In the crowded scrum, it's not easy to cram everything into their book bags, and you certainly can't to that to their carefully created art work! I really cannot imagine coping with twins! If they don't have a rucksack, perhaps you should take one, then you can stuff everything in there and still have two hands for that busy road. At first I used to try to get whichever GC it was to wear all the clothes they had - jumpers, coats etc, but that was a non-starter. It was usually cold in the morning, and much warmer by pick up time and there was no chance of them putting all the layers back on.
I think busy roads, narrow or non-existent pavements and far too much traffic is a common problem, unfortunately.
I can't get my head round the new routines, either! Yesterday was like 3-D chess and I quite literally ended up with a headache.

After his upset GS2, the new starter seemed ok to go in today.π€ Daisy after picking GS1 up after school yesterday I now know what you mean by 'crowded scrum'. And how is it that they all look the same?π"Good friends help you to find important things when you have lost them....your smile, your hope, and your courage."

Nana, the first time I collected GD without my distance glasses, when she was in reception,I realised how similar long haired little girls in navy blue uniform can look from a distance. I never forgot the glasses again!!βA grandchild fills a space in your heart that you never knew was empty.β β Unknown

That's funny Gem. I wish I had such a good reason. I am ashamed to say that I forgot which year he was in so stood waiting at the wrong exit. Luckily OH was with me so he waited by the other exit. Suddenly what seemed like thousands of children came pouring out. Last one left the exit I was covering so I looked towards OH. Beaming back at me was my GS1 with his GD. I even got a hug & a kiss. Not bad going for a nearly 7 1/2yr old. I asked if he minded me having a hug & he said 'course not, you're my Mamar'.β€"Good friends help you to find important things when you have lost them....your smile, your hope, and your courage."

Gem - it's hard when they're not wearing coats. GD1's last winter coat was pink with white spots and very easy to 'spot' (sorry about the pun)! Her new one is navy blue and will be much harder. GD2 is easier to spot because she's the jet-propelled one wearing glasses!!
I used to find it hard to spot them in the crowd at playgroup because I would have no idea what they were wearing, and I'd find myself mentally going through their wardrobes trying to spot them!!
Nana - it's lovely when they still want a hug from granny.

I think 'cake' is a word loved by most children!
Qwerty - I haven't had chance to mention this before. About the stuff they have to take to and from school. On Tuesday I went over to DS2's early to look after Cooper, and I had to scrape the ice off the windscreen! So I mentioned to DIL it was cold. So the girls went off to school with winter coats and cardigans to keep nice and cosy. It became very warm later on though. This was the day I left my phone at home, so as I had no pockets I left my car keys in the shop. I collected GD2, plus her warm winter coat, her cardigan, her book bag, her lunch box, her water bottle, a tiny little gold sticker she had been awarded, and finally a rather large shoe box which contained her very precious "About Me" collection. We then went round to the Junior school to collect GD1, who immediately handed me her coat, her cardigan, her lunch box, and her book bag with water bottle attached!
I negotiated with GD1 to carry her own book bag, which she can wear over her shoulder, jammed everything else into one hand, with the shoe box tucked under my arm, leaving one hand free to hang on to GD2 when crossing roads. I think if I'd had my phone and keys I would have had to hold them in my teeth!
Next time, I take my rucksack!!!"Joy is what happens to us when we allow ourselves to recognise how good things really are. "
