We were looking after our GDs this weekend, I went to get out of the chair and made a little noise as my back was playing up. Four year old GD stood in front of me and after a brief pause to think said, "are you getting old granny?."
Well after carrying her upstairs the previous evening when she felt poorly, I certainly felt I was getting old!
She had come down stairs with tummy ache an hour after going to bed and after I had carried her back up was promptly sick! She had been for her swimming lesson with her sister before they had come to us. " I think I must have drunk the swimming water,"she said. Chatting with GD after school she was telling me about her school trip tomorrow. It is to Yorkshire Sculpture Park, a lovely place. I said what a lovely place it was for children. Not only all the sculptures around the park, but plenty of space to run around. 'We won't be running around' she told me. 'We're not allowed to run around'. Well no, you can't have everyone running around on a school trip I agreed, but suggested that maybe after their lunch they would be allowed to for a while. GD looked at me 'Really?' she said 'Running around after lunch isn't a good idea!' I sometimes wonder who is the Grandma and who the 5 year old

Helping to get the boys in to DD1s car last night and Henry asked if he could show me what French people do when they get married!! He then reassured me that it wasn't rude and kissed me on both cheeks and then on my lips!! Phew!!

A few years ago we had Joe and Ben in the car taking them on a Christmas visit to husband's sister. we had just found out that precious Sadie was on the way (just). The boys were chatting in the back of the car and suddenly Joe announced that he knew how daddy put the baby in mummy's tummy. Holding my breath I asked him to tell us. " well what happens is that mummy and daddy go to bed...." Breath holding hard "and the he puts a seed in her tummy". Ben "How does he do that Joe?" Breathe holding very hard "I don't know I was in bed in my room". Breath out with a big smile and sigh of relief.

Yesterday we had my GS, 2 and 3 quarters, for the day. When his parents picked him up they were going to Stansted airport to stay in an airport hotel overnight, ready for an early morning flight to France today. They are going to a family wedding.
As it is a long journey to Stansted, GS was to watch some Thomas and Baby Jake DVDs in the car. SIL and DD were trying to sort out the device which fixed the DVD player to the headrest of the front seat. DD was getting a bit exasperated and saying 'Why didn't I do this earlier??!! GS looked up from his car seat and said in a very calm grown up voice 'Don't worry Mummy. It's OK, Daddy will do it" To anyone who knows them this is hilarious as SIL is completely impractical, DD is much more so.
Finally it was fixed, by DD. GS then piped up with "Well done Mummy?"
Such an encouraging child!

We had an entertaining art class on holiday! As you know we were staying with OH's sister and her husband, both of whom are older than us. Their 8 year old GD was visiting for a morning and wanted to play school, with her as the teacher and us 4 as the pupils. She decided on an art class and we were to draw an animal - any animal - and had to remember that the more detail we put in the better the grade! My OH easily fell into the role of the Naughty boy and at one point pretended to be asleep. The 'teacher' ended up ringing the Principal to report his behaviour and he was kept in at recess (break!). My BIL who had had a very busy morning dozed off to sleep and when the Naughty Boy pointed it out, the GD said "That's different - you were just pretending, and he's old and old people need more sleep"!!!

Joe and Sadie were with us this afternoon. Sadie is just at that age where granddad, who is very naughty, can tease her and she is just not quite sure whether he is telling the truth or not. Saturday is sweetie day (if they have been good) and I had bought a very interesting lolly which I thought was a butterfly. No it isn't a butterfly. Sadie says it is a dragon fly, OK then it is.

Husband said "don't you eat that poor dragon fly Sadie" Sadie "why not." Granddad "I know what you are going to do, you are going to eat its wings and then it won't be able to fly". Now as I say Sadie is not always trusting of what he says so she looked at me. I said nothing. Sadie "Granddad it is a lollipop it isn't real" husband "Of course it is, I just saw it wink at me". I am thinking at this point that he is going to make the child have nightmares! Sadie looked at me and showed me the lolly "grandma is this lolly really a dragon fly or is granddad being silly?" what could I say?

Later she saw him putting his glaucoma eye drops in, the drops have to be kept in the fridge and she had followed him into the kitchen as she want a drink and on seeing him doing his eye drops wanted to know what he was doing. He told her that one day, a long time ago, he was sitting on a stick (where did that come from?) and a little girl came along and said that he had lovely eyes and decided she wanted them so he now has new eyes and the drops were the glue to keep them in! Honestly is he trying to turn the child into a nervous wreck? When son and dil came to pick them up she repeated both episodes word for word to the great amusement of parents.

Husband is not great with babies, he said tonight that he really enjoys Sadie's age group and he knows in a year or so he won't get away with his tall stories, the boys just roll their eyes these days when he starts telling a story! I had a lot of cuddles today from both of them which I really needed.

My dad used to tell me that there were docks where they unloaded sugar in bexhill old town. I just took this to be true for years! I know where I got my sometimes, too vivid imagination from!
