Gem, hope it doesn't spoil your holiday plans.

We have heard today, that there is as yet one uncomfirmed person in our town, suspected of having the virus.
Sometimes I forget to like posts, but that doesn't mean I don't like them.

Nanto - if it is confirmed, I hope they can trace any contacts.

Calmed down and feeling more philosophical now

If flying not advised (and there is no sign of this yet) we will get our flight money back. Not what we want and I don't think this will happen. I certainly hope not.

If the parks close we will still go over. Staying in a villa we are not exposed to all the nasties that can be in hotels and on cruise ships.
Fantastic beaches less than a 2 hours drive, many other non-park things to do, and a lovely 5 bed, 3 bathroom villa with pool, many TVs, PlayStation, games room, etc etc. We won't exactly be slumming it

Will we be disappointed to travel all that way and not get to Disney, Universal and a water park? Of course , gutted ,and not only the children.
But, whatever happens as long as we are not ill, we will make the most of the situation.

I secured our first Fastpasses today
Two little-one friendly rides, for GS2's birthday. We will also see a 3D show which always has a very short queues, and maybe another ride if there one with a short queue. We intend to get over there after breakfast, have a couple of park hours then back to the villa for birthday party and pool time!

Gem - I hope it all goes to plan, but I think that's a good approach - hope for the best and be philosophical about it. As you say, your villa sounds wonderful and you're not too far away from other activities.

It could all be a lot easier to travel etc in a couple of weeks.

We will not be going to Florida in April.
The Disney, Universal and Seaworld parks are closed for at least the next 2 weeks. It is unlikely they will reopen after that, and we are due to fly on April 5th.
Flying could well be banned by then anyway, and if not it could happen when we were there, leaving us stranded. None of us were happy about that especially DD1 whose OH would be back here in the UK. Added to that the general stress and unhappiness the whole family have been feeling recently about something which should have been a wonderful trip. Not to mention risk of picking up the virus while travelling. We have decided not to go.

So, we should be able to move our flights, so we are looking into October. Half term week and take the kids out of school for a week. DD2 has already spoken the the head of their school, as GD will be in year 6. He says that time will be fine. GD is ahead in everything anyway and has an exemplary attendance record.
Sadly the villa is booked up for the rest of this year so we can't move our dates. As we are cancelling less than 4 weeks before travel we are not entitled to any money back. We will of course look into whether our travel insurance covers it. The park tickets are valid throughout 2020, so that's OK. We were to pay the airport taxi man on the day, so I will cancel him, explain and apologise, and hopefully can book him for the rearranged trip.
We will lose the Premier Inn night in Manchester, as we didn't take the one you can cancel, but that's not a great amount.
OH will look into the car hire. I'm hoping we can either cancel and be refunded, or move the date.

GD age 10 has taken it so maturely. We talked about it a lot on the journey home from school yesterday. She could see several positives to going in October!
It will be easy with GS2, as he is only little. GS1 , aged 7 will not take it well I fear
I feel sad for us all and especially the children. We feel it is important to try to present it to them as postponed rather than cancelled.
The catsitter is fine for October. I need to talk to my friends C and P, who I need to be here for my mum, as well as DD3.

Lots to do and think about.

Some of you may remember the last (And first and only) big family holiday. OH and I booked a big villa in Majorca for everyone.
My OH became ill the day before we were to fly and we couldn't go, even though it was for our joint 60th. Of course we told everyone else to go. Luckily she recovered, we bought some more outward flights and we joined everyone and had a lovely time. However we missed 2 days of our week and I was highly stressed and worried about OH.

I try not to to think family holidays are doomed, but it's not easy!

Oh Gemini I am sorry but not surprised that your trip has had to be cancelled but at least now you know it isn't possible, do hope you all get there in October. I bet GS No1 will be cross, he wouldn't understand the implications of the situation.

So sorry Gem, but not surprised. October is a lovely time to go. Hopefully by then, all this will be behind us. Xx

Oh, Gem, I know how much you were all looking forward to this holiday, but I think you've taken the wisest decision. Getting stranded there is a big risk - my DIL2 got stranded in the States when 9/11 happened, and it wasn't easy. It would be much worse with the children as well. I hope GS1 can be persuaded that it is the best thing as he wouldn't be able to go to the theme parks and have all the fun.

Thinking about it being postponed is a good, positive option. I just hope all the cancellations don't cost you too much money.

                          Sending hugs. xxx

                            Thank you ladies.

I think once his initial disappointment is over, GS1 will be OK. He's a clever boy and will understand about the virus. The proposed trip will include his birthday in October so I think that will be a lure. Also he's always hoping for time off school, so when he knows he still gets the Easter holidays when we woudl have been away PLUS a week off school in October, he will be sold. Like me he loves Halloween and the parks will be very much decorated for that, so I think he will come to see it as a good thing.

Just fingers crossed we can move the flights and find a villa.

Travel from the UK to the States has now been banned, so we couldn't go even if we hadn't decided not to.
