    National Trust problem

    Well, what do you think?

I have absolutely no issues with the LGBT community
at all some of my best friends are gay I don't even like to use the word gay as if they are something different than the rest of the human population they are just people like us all , but I do get a bit cross when NT bosses force their volunteers to wear the gay pride badges/lanyards and telling them if they didn't, they would be banished to back room duties.

Most charities rely very heavily on the volunteers and really couldn't function without them. I think this time the NT was insensitive to the feelings of others and it would have served them right if the volunteers voted with their feet and all went to back room duties. They wouldn't have been able to open their doors.

It appears now in the last day or two the NT have backed down and the wearing of such badges and lanyards is now up to the individual.

Nice to see common sense prevails!

I feel the ame Qwerty. the National Trust relies heavily on their volunteers and I found the whole idea ludicrous. What good would it have done anyway. Glad to see they have backtracked...pc gone mad.....again!

I expect they have spent my money on having these badges made, what were they thinking

I also agree, especially as these are volunteers for goodness sake! Volunteers are to be treasured, not alienated! Not everyone would be happy to wear such a badge especially the older generation, which many volunteers are.
I think rethinking the decision was the right thing to do.

I don't know what made them come to that decision in the first place.Seems a bit strange to me. Have they ever donei anything like that before with any other organisation?

Clover, it is to mark the 50th anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality. Something most would agree with I imagine, knowing how many suffered and committed suicide, and endured prison sentences before that.
A good thing to celebrate, and I know all my family and close friends wouldn't think twice about wearing these badges.
However, as we know not everyone agrees, and certainly no one should be compelled to wear such a badge. It should be a free choice to wear or not to wear one.

I realise this is an extremely significant and important anniversary It's just I wonder why the NT is ,or would like to ,be so involved.

Thank you for explaining about the 50th anniversary Gem. I would have no problem with wearing a badge in support but I think they went the wrong way about it by making it compulsory. At least this has bought it to even more people's attention so I guess that is no bad thing. Unbelievable how different things were only 50 years ago.

                      Clover, this is why :

"The move came after a new film made by the National Trust revealed that Robert Wyndham Ketton-Cremer, the hall’s last owner who bequeathed it to the nation, was gay."

Have not heard about this , but I would say give people the choice , most people wouldn't mind at all but sadly there are still a lot of people who wont want to , It has to be individual choice doesn't it , send the spare ones to me NT I will wear them

I know it's a very important anniversary and I agree wholeheartedly with it but there are so many other diversity and equality issues that could also do with showing support.
Diversity around age, race and gender for a start , imagine if there was a badge for every topic, the poor volunteers would be covered from head to toe with them . They are volunteers with minds of their own and they should be able to make their minds up themselves as to what they agree with showing support for and I personally don't think the 'work place' is the place for this. If a company wants to support a certain topic they should do it via their headed notepaper , websites etc,
