Who cooks in your household? If you now live alone, who cooked in the past?
Is/was there a main cook, do/did you share equally, or is it a bit hit and miss?
When OH and I first moved in together, 11 years ago, she still worked full time. I worked part time (and had GC and parental duties!) and had the experience of many years of cooking for a family, so it seemed obvious that the cooking fell to me. She cooked once in a blue moon.
I actually dislike cooking, so after OH had been retired a while I suggested she took a turn once in a while. There was some resistance and some saying she couldn't cook, but we soon settled into a fairer routine.
OH can cook perfectly well and her confidence and ability have increased a lot with practice.
We have a system which works for us. We generally make our own breakfast and lunch, occasionally making lunch for the other. We alternate cooking the main meal. If we eat out or order a takeaway, the cook for that night cooks the following night. We rarely stray from the routine. There are exceptions of course, one has to be flexible! When OH broke her wrist and couldn't cook for weeks, and when I was ill and could neither cook nor wish to eat, obviously the other one does all the cooking.
How does/did it work for you?
Are/were you happy with this, or would you prefer things to work differently?
