    Who cooks?

Who cooks in your household? If you now live alone, who cooked in the past?

Is/was there a main cook, do/did you share equally, or is it a bit hit and miss?

When OH and I first moved in together, 11 years ago, she still worked full time. I worked part time (and had GC and parental duties!) and had the experience of many years of cooking for a family, so it seemed obvious that the cooking fell to me. She cooked once in a blue moon.

I actually dislike cooking, so after OH had been retired a while I suggested she took a turn once in a while. There was some resistance and some saying she couldn't cook, but we soon settled into a fairer routine.

OH can cook perfectly well and her confidence and ability have increased a lot with practice.
We have a system which works for us. We generally make our own breakfast and lunch, occasionally making lunch for the other. We alternate cooking the main meal. If we eat out or order a takeaway, the cook for that night cooks the following night. We rarely stray from the routine. There are exceptions of course, one has to be flexible! When OH broke her wrist and couldn't cook for weeks, and when I was ill and could neither cook nor wish to eat, obviously the other one does all the cooking.

How does/did it work for you?
Are/were you happy with this, or would you prefer things to work differently?

I would like a chef, actually.
I do the lions share here. OH did very well when I was poorly though. He has now discovered M&S food, so if I give notice that it would be nice if he cooked for a change, that’s where he goes and we have a feast.

Grauntie I have always said I appreciate being cooked for. Be it a gourmet meal, beans on toast or a ready meal, it's just nice not to have to do it yourself all the time isn't it?!

I have a handsome young man cook for me every night, he pours me a glass of wine and serves me wonderful food.

I've always done the cooking. Most of the time I don't enjoy doing it - it's just a necessity, on a par with doing the washing. Occasionally I'm in the mood and quite enjoy it, but not that often!

For OH the kitchen is untrodden territory. He makes chutney/jam once or twice a year - provided I source and weigh out all the ingredients. On Monday night when I was eating out with friends I left him a meal he just needed to reheat in the microwave.

Our routine is that he clears up after dinner, loads the dishwasher, washes up anything else and makes a cup of tea.

Usually we just have a sandwich mid-day and sometimes he'll make that if I'm busy, but not often.

            I'm with Grauntie - I'd like a chef - or a closer M&S Food Hall!!

              I always cooked till B retired ,

He now does all the cooking and he’s a fantastic chef very adventurous with his cooking ,

Only thing now I make is Scones he likes mine above his , it’s the only thing he can’t get right

I do all the clearing and washing up as I like that job , I clean the kitchen etc

Lunch time we only have a sandwich so that falls to whoever isn’t busy

Of course when he was ill I cooked but mainly for myself a lot as he wasn’t eating but as soon as he felt up to it he took over , he loves cooking

Gem S is a. Good cook that Chicken and Tarragon dish she made us was delicious, I cleared my plate if you remember and B was surprised as I never do that 😁

Same with Daisy she has cooked for us too and again Delicious , B even enjoyed her Flambé tomatoes 😁

Hubby admits he wouldn't know where to start.

Some of these OHs (Daisy, Nan2) need a course of cookery lessons for Christmas 😄

Hubby can be an untidy worker sometimes.

Gem - I've offered him one, many times.

My Hubby does the cooking. He thinks he’s better than me and finds it relaxing 😏, so I let him get on with it I say.
I’d like the chance now and then. If I go in the kitchen and dare to stir a pan I get The look or a sigh. So I retreat again. 😏

GJ, is he a messy cook?
My ex was a wonderful cook, far better than me or my OH. It was wonderful to be cooked for, but I had to remind myself of that when I was clearing up after him!!

Oh gosh yes he uses every pan we have!
But he has been known to clean as he goes sometimes.
