Gem - has there been another fire at the Minster much more recently - or am I imagining things?

You're right Daisy. Without looking it up it was something like 1983.

        Lol! I know I'm getting on a bit, but I didn't think I could remember 1840!!!

          LOL Daisy!

I looked it up. I was almost right -

          York Minster fire
On 9 July 1984, York Minster suffered a serious fire in its south transept during the early morning hours. Firefighters made a decision to deliberately collapse the roof of the South Transept by pouring tens of thousands of gallons of water onto it, in order to save the rest of the building from destruction.

The fire was terrible, it really shook the people of York. We all love the Minster.

For me it didn't hit me as it would at any other time as a little girl I knew aged 5, died the same week. This was before compulsory seat belts. The family car was in an accident. She was thrown out of the car and died

Gem, what an awful, tragic accident.

There is more sadness surrounding that poor family I will write about it elsewhere.

I hope to fly to Florida with them next year! After the demise of Thomas Cook, they plan to fly direct from Manchester to Orlando from next month. Virgin needs competition!
