    Saying Goodbye

The sad thing about having pets is that almost certainly there comes a point where you have to say goodbye.

I got a phone call from DS2 this morning to say that the blood tests the vet did on Midge (their dog) yesterday are not good. Either his kidneys or his liver, or possibly both are failing and the vet has given him about a month at most. So in an agonising day, DS and DIL have decided the kindest option will be to have him put to sleep. One of the downsides of running your own business is that you have responsibilities to your customers and tomorrow is out of the question. They've decided the vet will go round on Monday morning. But their estate is being cabled at the minute and the noise outside the house today was unbearable with angle grinders and kango hammers making the house shake. Midge wasn't too happy, so tomorrow I'm going round to look after him so they don't have to worry about him being frightened. But it's going to be a sad day.

Thank you Oma. I feel as sad as I do over Rusty and Clyde. The three of them have been together a long time - Midge is over 16. They've also got to decide what to say to the girls.

It is very sad to lose a pet, my family have not long ago said goodbye to a much loved golden retriever. It is so much nicer if they pass away quietly at home but that rarely happens and a decision has to be made, a sad one.

Im so sorry to read this Daisy. People who don't have pets don't understand this sadness, but we do. I hope that you get in lots of stroking & cuddle time. 😢

Very sad when this happens. I know I was distraught when our old cat was put to sleep, she was 18. People said"it's only a cat"! They just didn't understand. Really feel for your family xx

Thank you so much, ladies. Your kind words really do help. I've spent the day with Midge. He was asleep when I got there but did lift his head up, give me a good sniffing (he could smell Eva on me, I expect) and then went back to sleep. I sat with him and cuddled him most of the morning, but he did get up and go into the kitchen to ask for his mid-morning biscuit. I took him for a short walk, which he enjoyed, sniffing every post, bush and lamppost. It was so sad saying goodbye to him - if I see him on Monday it will be just because I'm taking one of the girls to playgroup or school so won't be able to say anything. They haven't told the girls yet, and have decided just to talk in general terms about him being poorly and giving him an extra special cuddle before they go to school.
