A new Member of the Family

Thank you all so much for your lovely warm comments. I know not everyone loves dogs, but all your comments are lovely, welcoming Eva and understanding how important a dog is in my life.

She is very friendly and loving - she came from a family whose circumstances sadly changed and they couldn't keep her any more. She's been in the Rescue Centre for about 3 months - first of all she came into season then she suffered a phantom pregnancy (where her body thinks she's having puppies but she's not). It's not that uncommon but it's the Centre's policy to spay all bitches but this can't be done until all her symptoms have cleared up. She's still producing a little milk and today has gone round the house collecting 'babies' to nurture. She's got a litter of 3 soft toys and a pair of socks. We have to take her to see the charity's vet in 2 weeks and then they'll arrange to spay her. When all that is done, the charity will hand her over legally. So although she's here, the adoption process isn't quite complete yet. It could only happen to us, and we've been nervous wrecks all week in case we couldn't have her.

The photo isn't great - her previous training didn't cover posing for photos. She will however shake paws and give you a high-5.

Well that's like adopting a human child, Daisy. You have them before they are officially yours!

Daisy, our friends parents have a terrier dog who was ike that. Collecting 'babies' Once she was spayed she was OK.

I've been reading up on spaying - the last lady doggy I had was when I was about 10! - and that seems to be the universal opinion - spaying stops it happening again. But apparently if her hormones haven't totally settled down it can cause complications. I'm assuming they'll do a blood test or something to check.

She's lovely Daisy,are you keeping her name or going to change it. You have to be a dog lover to understand the massive hole they leave in your life, hope you have been blessed with a well trained dog and there isn't to much hard work for you.

Awww she's smiling , 😀 a happy dog you have there , although I haven't had a dog for a lot of years well since my children were little and I tried to talk my DD out of getting one ,I must admit Storm got under our skins and into our hearts very very quickly , I have turned all soppy when he comes to visit 😉

LG - I was inclined to change her name - it doesn't trip off the tongue easily, but every body else seems to like it, and she responds well to it, so I think she will remain Eva. She is very well-mannered about the house - doesn't steal food, if she jumps up a quiet 'Off' command stops her. She does 'sit', 'down' 'leave' very well. She's excitable on the lead and we're getting some one-to-one training to help with that. Recall is good in the house, but I doubt it would be off the lead!

Overnight her maternal hormones seem to have kicked in, and at the moment she's fixated on her 'babies'. There's nothing we can do except let nature take its course, but she now has a very large 'family' and is concentrating on caring for them. I do feel sorry for her, but eventually her hormones will calm down.

Plant - she has got a lovely face and it looks as though she's got black lipstick and kohl eyeliner!

Oma - Storm is a lovely dog and I can see he's well-loved.

Gem - yes, she is being a good girl. OH took her round the estate delivering cards yesterday and she was very good. Then he had to go into the village to get a huge sack of dog food, so he put her in his car (we usually use mine which is an estate) and she sat quietly on the back seat. She's got a date with our vet this afternoon for a check up, and she'll also get to meet our dog trainer friend, so lots of excitement for her.
