We buried her this morning. Lots of tears, but we know we did the best for her.

That's true Libra. Other friends can sympathise because they know we are sad, but they don't know that awful feeling.
Our other 3 cats seem subdued. She hissed at them often, and didn't seem to like them much, although sometimes she would sleep right next to them. Maybe the cats are just picking up on our mood, or many they know something has happened?“A grandchild fills a space in your heart that you never knew was empty.” – Unknown

Gem, I think your other cats know something's happened. Cats have very sophisticated communication signals, and I think they will also pick up on your and OH's sadness. For weeks after we lost Rusty Clyde would look in Rusty's favourite sleeping places and just stand and look. Of course, we had no idea what was going through his mind, but it was sad to see. He does it less now, but just occasionally you can see him looking round expecting to see Rusty bounding over to him."Joy is what happens to us when we allow ourselves to recognise how good things really are. I've just come back from France and found this. So, so sad, I've been there and wept bitter tears over my cats, but at least you know that puss went without sny pain or suffering. Big hugs to you both x

This morning I looked out and saw one of our others cats was sitting close to Alices 'grave' - where she is buried and the rosebush we planted. This is not the first time I have seen her sit there. It is not a part of the garden any of them sit in usually. We were both quite moved to see here there this morning, seemingly spending time by Alices grave.
(Possibly because in life it was very hard for her to get that close to Alice, due to her hissing at her!!)

It's impossible to know what goes on in our pets' minds, Gemini, but I agree with you - they do form bonds and I think it's quite likely that this cat 'knows' Alice is buried there. For months after Rusty died, Clyde would look for him in the places he usually lay, and when we came in to the house he would check round as if he thought we had got Rusty with us. At the moment DS2's dog is spending quite a bit of time with us, and when he's not here Clyde looks for him. He woke me up at 4 am last night standing where Midge's bed is usually put, crying loudly, as though he was calling for Midge! I put him back into his own bed and he went back to sleep!
Oma, Jasper sounds quite a character and very good at sticking up for for himself."Joy is what happens to us when we allow ourselves to recognise how good things really are. "
