Poorly puss cat

One of our cats isn't well. It is the cat which was my OHs. For some weeks now she keeps being sick, but apart from that seemed well, eating etc. We have taken her to the vets several times. All seems well when he palpates her abdomen, he couldn't feel anything and no tenderness apparent. He gave anti inflammatory and antibiotics, which cleared it up, for couple of weeks. Then it started again so he did the same. This time it lasted only days.
OH took the cat back to the vet on Friday, as she was bringing back just about everything she ate by now. Bloods were taken to check her kidney and liver function. OH phoned for the results this morning, and the nurse said the vet would phone her back before he goes out on his large animal visits.
Over the weekend she has hardly eaten and we can't be sure she is drinking. She doesn't look right either. 3 of our 4 cats are always upstairs waiting for food each morning and she is one of those. Today she wasn't. We are worried and OH is very worried I can tell. She lived alone with this cat for years. She loves her to bits and my OH is definitely number 1 in the cats eyes.

There is hope, Gem. Our old cat did this about once every two years, all the tests and then bingo he just recovered. I think they have their 'downtimes' like we do when they are off colour, don't eat or appear to drink.

I can only hope this is the case as these pets of ours are so important and special to us. We both miss our gorgeous cat, ,the old devil, what a character! Hopefully there will be some good news. XXX

Bloods not showing anything up from the tests they took. We are to take her in to the larger branch of our vets tomorrow morning for further investigations.

Gemini I think Elisi may be right. DS2's dog is going through something similar. He's on Zantac at the moment and we hope that sorts things out. Elderly digestives systems have much the same problems whether they're human canine or feline. I hope that's all it is. Xx

The fact that the bloods don't show anything is very promising Gem. If nothing is revealed they might suggest a special diet like Hills ID or even ZD to see if it settles. It's hard to diagnose a problem when cats are sick as their gut is so sensitive and can take a long time to recover from any upset. Hope all goes well with the tests.

Our cat was like that and it turned out one of her upper teeth were rubbing on her lower jaw and this was making her unwell. A neat bit of dentistry by the vet and a course of antibiotics she was ok. Is her teeth ok ?
How old is she. I hope she gets well really soon

Thanks ladies, your input and support means a lot.
I gave her a small amount of cooked chicken an hour ago. Having had no interest in breakfast she ate it, so I gave her a 2nd portion. Not too much though, and chopped small. So far, she has kept it down. She is the most annoying of our cats, but when they are ill you are so concerned and just want them better!

Mimi, I presume the vet has checked her teeth, but I will ask OH. She is 14 I think. My 2 cats are 16 and she's a year or 2 younger.

That could be the cause Gemini her teeth , If she is eating small amounts of chopped chicken there is no harm in keeping that up till shes well again. only trouble there she may become fussy and only eat chicken My DD`s elderly cat before she passed away would only eat cooked ham and only if she was hand fed , had never been a fussy cat but got a taste of it when she was poorly and DD would sit on the floor every meal time hand feeding her, Animals cause us as much heartache as our children at times don't they , xxxxx

Good news that nothing showed up in the bloods.Hope it is just a dental problem, and hope she makes a quick recovery.

She kept the lunchtime chicken down, so I gave her more at 4.
Oma, when one of my cats was at the end of his life (we spent a fortune at the vets over 3 weeks, they never found out what the problem was, and he died ) my then OH bought cream and hand carved ham from the deli counter for him, which we hand fed him, and he would eat those and only those for his last few days.

My old ginger Tom - he was a big boy and very grumpy - had a problem with his teeth as well, I fed him shredded ham and chicken with rice, yes by hand as well! Eventually he had most of his teeth removed. It was a shock to us as we regularly had their teeth checked however he was a bit of a difficult boy so I don't blame a vet for not wanting to take too close a look. Didn't like anyone touching him except me and could be quite nasty if he really took against someone.

Big Liz, God rest her soul, was a different cat after having all her teeth out. She lasted another 5 years and was very elderly, blind and deaf when she went over the Rainbow bridge. Molly the Collie had pancreatitis and was very ill, but a very low fat diet has sorted that. Maybe it's similar.

The chicken came back eventually. She had a little left over salmon from my tea, which has stayed down so far.
We shall see what the vet finds, if anything, tomorrow.

GM - Pancreatitis is horrible. Clyde, our Yorkie, has had it and that's what lead to his diabetes. He's now on Royal Canin Diabetic kibble, plus, of course the finely chopped cooked chicken breasts. But he dives straight into his bowl scattering food all over the utility room, and enjoys every morsel, so I'm not complaining.

But Gemini, if your cat's bloods were ok, she's not diabetic. I know you said her abdomen wasn't tender, but I wonder if she could have a blockage somewhere?
