    Cat problem

Our DS1 and DIL have a beautiful cat. They've had her since she was a tiny kitten, and she's has grown up to be quite independent. Their garden backs on to woodland and she goes off hunting and doing cat things a lot, but always comes home regularly to attend to her tummy - food and tickling!

Today she came home very dirty - she normally looks immaculate - and on closer inspection, reeking of tom cat. DIL gave her a bath, and she tolerated it very well, so we think she was unhappy with the state she was in.

So we're wondering - did she stray into a tom's territory and get in a fight (there don't seem to be any injuries), or is it possible even though she's speyed some naughty boy tried to have his wicked way with her.

A few years ago a friend had a neutered tom who still fancied the ladies, and apparently this can happen if the operation isn't complete (very hazy on the details of what I was told). So do any of our granny cat experts know if a speyed girl can still attract a tom?

    Poor little thing!!
I haven't heard of that happening to a speyed female cat, but that doesn't mean it can't happen.

As she seems well and uninjured nothing to worry about as long as it doesn't happen again ( if it did I would want a vet to check her over)

They will probably never find out what happened I imagine!

Thanks, Gem. I know nothing about cats, but I said to DIL that if it does happen again a trip to the vets might be in order.

She was very tired and slept for several hours after her bath, and is now cleaning herself all over - perhaps she didn't care for the shampoo.

If they are feral Tom's they may have been chasing her and warning her off .
we had a Tom cat when I was a teenager who would just pin the female cat down by the neck and growl very loudly then roll them around kicking with his back legs till the female knew her place . He could be quite viscose at times , Yet he was a very loving cat normally .

Cats are strange creatures arnt they

Nanto - so am I glad she seems ok - she's such a sweet kitty.

Oma - it's quite possible there are feral toms around. I'll pass that on to DIL, although there's not much they can do to keep her safe as she likes to be outside.

They are strange, but quite fascinating. I think dogs are less complicated generally even though they take more looking after.

Our cat has been spayed but that didn't stop a very randy tom cat from next door attacking her . It was as if he knew she wasn't able to 'mate' with him so he was really aggressive towards her.
She was a very nervous cat before but this has only made things worse. The neighbours who owned the cat have moved taking their cat with them thankfully but in they place we now have neighbours with 3 unneutered tom cats roaming around our patio and back door. They spray all over the cat flap and doorstep. Every morning without fail we have to sprinkle Jeyes Fluid around the effected area. It's the only thing we have found that combats the smell of tom cat .

Oh I wish people would neuter their pets Mimi!!
Unfair to the cat as they are more prone to infections, unfair to the uwanted kittens which result and very unfair to neighbours like you.
The Jeyes fluid is a useful tip. We have never found anything which combats it, apart from painting what it is on if it is paintable!

Mimi - it seems as though a spayed girl can still have unwanted attentions, but having three unneutered toms next door must be a bit of a nightmare.

Gem - there's a lot of debate in the dog world about whether to neuter or not, but generally dogs don't roam free so don't have the opportunities unneutered cats have.
