Another poorly hedgehog to the hedgehog lady

My OH and her friend spotted a hedgehog in our garden feeding station this afternoon. It is a bad sign to be out during the day and it didn't look well. OH phoned the hedgehog lady and she was in so they took the hedgehog over. A female, very small, very cold.
She was given intravenous fluids to hydrate her and of course warmed up, and was given antibiotics.
She messaged OH later to say she had found a large weeping abscess on the hedgehogs tummy, so she will need different antibiotics from the vet tomorrow. This one was named Judith, after another golf friend who had donated £10 to the hedgehogs.
We hope Judith fares better than poor little Andrew who OH took in a few weeks ago, and had to be put down a few days later.

She is very elderly with worm down teeth and all the round worm, lung worm that poorly hedgehogs seem to have. She is on injectable antibiotics now and her abscess treated with honey as well. She is warm and cosy and well cared for. It may just be her time now but we are glad if so she will end her life in comfort not out in the cold.

Yes better than dying out in the cold . I know it's nature but still don't like to think of any animal dying like that xx

Poor thing. if she doesn't survive, at least people will have tried their best.
We love to see the hedgehogs coming in our garden.

Little Judith was put to sleep at the vets this morning. It was the kindest thing to do, the lady had done all she could, and she was an old lady.
            RIP little hedgehog.

Gem - it's sad, but very good that your OH saw her and recognised she was so poorly. As others have said, she's had a warm comfortable last few hours.

The winter takes its toll on poorly hogs, doesn't it. If they can't survive hibernation there's not much chance for them.

Your hedgehog lady sounds very experienced and skilful.

Daisy, Fiona is amazing. Only in her 40's, 2 school aged children, a job and devotes SO much time effort and money to the hedgehogs.

What an inspiration she is. I hope she gets plenty of support too. xx

                      Thank Daisy, she does
Donations of money and of hedgehog food, puppy pads and all sorts of things come in. Used newspapers too are very welcome, and there are usually some on her doorstep which people have dropped off when she's not in.
