    Poorly little hedgehog

This morning OH found a hedgehog in our garden. We know a hedgehog out in the open in daylight is a bad thing. OH tried to phone 2 of our friends who both know a lot about hedgehogs. Neither were in.
She put the hedgehog in a box and eventually got though to one of the friends, who gave her the number of someone who rescues hedgehogs. When she eventually got through it was an answerphone message saying she was so full no more creatures could be taken in.
Then OH spoke to our friend again, who suggested another hedgehog place. The problem was I was having my reflexology treatment and it was getting to time for OH to get to the golf club for a competition.
Our friend very kindly offered to come and collect the hedgehog and take it to the lady who had space.
It is boy hedgehog, very small and dehydrated and and not in a good way. She will do what she can, but he may not survive
We don't think he can be one of ours. Definitely not Hermione who is really big, and OH doesn't think it is the other one either.
Fingers crossed for the poor little guy.

How strange Gem. OH came back from walking the dog & found a small hedgehog curled up in a tight ball nr the road this morning. He brought it into our garden as we have a hedgehog box. He checked about half an hr later & it had gone. Presumably to hide away somewhere.

      Hope your's makes it. 🤞

            Thanks everyone.
The hedgehog lady has a FB page which she updates daily, about all the animals in her care. Andrew, as OH named him, has survived the night and eating. Not out of the woods but still hope for him. If he makes it he may be brought back to our garden, as they like to replace them where they found them if possible,

Gem - I do hope the little guy survives. He needs to gain weight before he hibernates, doesn't he? How lovely that in this day and age of people being so busy that a little group of caring people working together may be able to save him.

How is Andrew, Gem? Just been watching our local news where they were visiting a local hedgehog rescue centre. They had some little baby hogs who had lost most of their spines ☹️

Enfys, we don't know. The lady hasn't updated her page for a while. Two days ago the report was he was fading fast and no hope, she had stopped treating him, he wouldn't eat or anything. Later that day she said he was still hanging in there, so she started to treat him again. Since then no word.
I will update if w ehave news.

After deteriorating for several days they had Andrew put to sleep today.
OH is very sad about it.
Poor Andrew, but I'm glad his last days were spent being taken care of, and if he couldn't get better he wasn't left any longer.

Gem, that's so sad, poor little thing. But much better to pts than let him suffer.

Yesterday we visited the lady who looked after Andrew.

Such a lovely lady. She has school aged children and a part time job and has hedgehogs everywhere.
Some in a large purpose built shed with heat and lighting, some outside in hutches (those are the ones being hardened off ready to go) and half a dozen in the house. The ones inside are the very poorly ones, like Andrew was, and need constant attention.
She is cleaning, feeding, injecting, dosing and monitoring these little creatures and making notes, and finding time to update her FB hedgehog page regularly .
She has a small team of volunteer foster carers who will take the hedgehogs once they are on the road to recovery.
She has to pay vets bills, pay for antibiotics and other drugs, food and so many other things.
People are very kind and often take her food (own brand kitten biscuits are fine) heating pads, puppy pads and cash donations. Newspapers are very welcome too!
OH took a very generous donation, which the lady was most grateful for.
How lovely that there are people like this in the world. There are many like her around the country.

Oh I must have missed about Andrew did he not make it ? I meant to ask when we met up , poor Andrew ,

I bet she was very grateful for the donation , not many people think of these people when donating money , our Hedgehogs are just as important for the survival of our wildlife .

Gem - what a wonderful, caring lady. Thank you also to S for being so generous. Even small donations can make a big difference but people don't always realise how expensive things like vet fees are. I remember years ago having a rescue border collie and the rescue centre asking me to make the cheque payable to their vets!
