** Slow Cooker Red Cabbage Recipe

I recently put out a cry for help with cooking red cabbage in the slow cooker. Our very own slow cooker guru, Nanto, recommended everyone's friend, Mr Google, and this is what I chose:

    https://www.hungryhealthyhappy.com/s...r-red-cabbage/

I'm pleased to say it was as easy as they said and the quantities given would feed a small army after a long march! So I popped the left overs in the fridge and they do indeed keep for 3 days. I've just take out what I need each time and microwaved it in a pyrex dish.

I added some nutmeg and a bit extra cinnamon and maybe that masked the slight vinegar taste they mention. Next time I'll add some orange juice and zest - or maybe red wine. In fact, definitely red wine!

Oma - that sounds tasty, although I don't think the inside of my spice cupboard has ever seen a caraway seed.

Dasiy I love red cabbage. It was my signature dish in my younger day

Mine was very similar to that recipe, but with the addition of a knob of butter, and cooked slowly, abut 45 minutes in a pan with lid on.

I think my version had apple in, in fact I am sure it does. I haven't make it for years as OH isn't keen. Once we are allowed to socialise I will make it again for guests to enjoy

I've never cooked red cabbage, never eaten it cooked.
i remember my grandparents having it,but it was just pickled in vinegar.

Nanto - I wouldn'g touch it for years because that was all I remembered - yukky, pickled in vinegar. But I did it braised for Christmas dinner a few years ago and liked it. The recipe was such a long-winded affair though and I swore I'd never do it again. Then when OH was diagnosed with Macular Degeneration almost 3 years ago I upped the number of colourful veggies that we eat (dark veggies are supposed to be good for eyes) and started buying it again. It's a good standby veg, especially in these lockdown times, because it keeps (raw) well in the salad drawer of the fridge, and I sometimes use it in stir fries. But I'll definitely do it in the slow cooker from now on - it's nothing like what our grandparents did to it!

Glamm - the 500g in the recipe was too much - I shall halve it next time, but it will keep in the fridge, cooked, for a day or two.

Oma - I've always thought one day I'd taste something vinegary and decide I like it. Sadly, it hasn't happened yet. Your salt and vinegar crisps are safe with me!
