Trifle

I haven't made one during lockdown yet, but I'm looking for an opportunity. Mainly because I've always wanted a traditional trifle bowl and I now have one.

My dad always made us a trifle for Boxing Day and birthdays, and when I do make one I use his method -

Sherry-soaked trifle sponges to line the bottom, followed by tinned fruit (usually peaches), red jelly all mashed up so it sparkles, a good thick layer of Bird's Custard (made from custard powder) topped with whipped double cream and decorated with fruit, sprinkles etc.


I'm sure there are lots of variations, though????

I use the sponge cakes to line the sides and bottom of a trifle bowl, previously soaked in sherry or fruit juice, add tinned fruit and then pour over custard. Cream served on the side. Making my mouth water.

Love trifle but it must contain jelly fruit custard and cream , only use sponge if it's a sherry trifle,
jelly with fruit set in it then custard layer thick enough to hold its shape then either double cream or Birds Dream topping finished with glace cherries and sprinkles or a flake crumbled over the top

I use a jam swiss roll in a trifle, minus the sherry.
Hubby likes a sherry a trifle, i don't. I usually use a raspberry or strawberry jelly.
I also prefer it without fruit. The custard has to thick, and lashings of whipped cream.

We inherited a lovely trifle bowl from my auntie when she moved and downsized last year (and a nice little nest of tables )
I am fancying trifle now too!!
I'm not so keen on the sherry in it, but if any of you want to invite me round and the trifle has sherry in it, I won't make a fuss

I haven’t had a bowl of trifle for years! I can’t have the custard, although I could easily make it with a milk substitute, and I can’t have whipped cream. Oh how I fancy trifle right now...😋

Grauntie - I can't have the cream either, but I would put it on and then I've got the best excuse to dig down for extra sherry-soaked sponge because I have to get the spoon under and away from the cream.
