    Noisy night out!

Last night a group of close friends went out for a meal. There are 8 of us, and we always eat out to celebrate each others birthdays, and last year we all went away to Northumberland to celebrate OHs and my 60th birthdays.
Last night was one of those birthday meals. We got a taxi into town and had a drink in a nice quiet pub we have been to before, then onto the restaurant.
This was a small Italian restaurant that none of us had been to before, recommended to the birthday girl by a work colleague. It was busy, packed and noisy. Not with music, buy talk!! Tables were quite close together which increased the noise. All the staff were Italian and talked a lot, loudly, in Italian. There was an Italian football match on the flat screen TV on the wall. Luckily the volume was down but the excited waiters made plenty of noise at certain times when watching it as they passed!
All in all I enjoyed the meal. The food was good, the staff really lovely, the price not too bad. It was hard to chat to anyone not next to or opposite me however.
We left there and as it was just after 10, we decided to go for drink before going for taxis home. Not back to the nice quiet pub, but to somewhere I have only been to once before and hated that time! Loud music and nowhere to sit. My 2 pet hates!! If I am out with friends I want to actually talk to them, and I do like a seat especially at the end of a night out! A couple of seats became available and I sat down . One of our friends, the youngest who is only 50, sat down too, to chat to me. The others remain standing even when 3 or 4 more seats became available. Sometimes I feel I am on a different planet to others!!
I did enjoy my night, but came home with a sore throat from talking too loudly to my friends!

DD1 commented a while back that she knew she was getting older now that the first thing she looks for in a pub is a seat!

Having experienced a wedding where we left as soon as we could because the music made your ear drums bounce, made sure when DDs married they had a quiet area for people to chat and catch up. Seems a waste not to be able to communicate with people you only see occasionally!

I must admit when we were at Six restaurant in Newcastle both my friend and I found the noise difficult. The ceilings were quite high and the tables quite close together we spent most of the time asking each other to repeat what we had said and we couldn't have a four way conversation even though the table was quite small.

We've left restaurants before because of loud music and nothing to absorb the sound on the floors or walls. Admittedly they tended to be in student areas when visiting the children so I doubt that our custom was missed!

I hope The Old Joint Pub, Birmingham will not be noisy. At least we have seats

We went out for tea with the family to a small place called Liberty Brown's lovely place but the music was blasting after 10 minutes I had enough so called the waiter over to ask them to turn it down he couldn't hear what I was saying so had to write it on a napkin he agreed it was far too loud and went to see the manager who came over and apologised he said some young people like it blasting , my SIL pointed out that there was lots of families with young children who wanted to chat not shout at each other

I do not like TVs in pubs and eating places. When we were in Newcastle we went into a place that looked nice but it was obviously a sports pub so we walked out. There are quite a few in London and with the rugby World Cup you can guarantee it is going to be a non sports lovers nightmare!!

Gemini - you had a busy night! I hate noisy restaurants and pubs too. Ir I want to listen to music I would go to a concert, a club or other music venue. When I go out for a meal I want to enjoy the meal and the company of the people I'm with! I know I'm a grumpy old woman!!

I too don't like noisy busy bars unless I am quite "tipsy" myself which of course I never am.... I like a seat and I like to be able to have a catch up with friends, we have a local about 10 minute walk they have different things going on at the weekend, sometimes a live band, disco or quiz, I always check whats on before we go, because it depends on what mood I am in...
