    House Keys

Gem's thread about being head hunted as cat sitters brought up the topic of house keys, and trusting other people with them. It made me wonder who has your house keys, apart from family?

Our next door neighbours have our house key, as they both work from home so are most likely to be in if we lock ourselves out or something silly. My friend who looks after Eva and lived with us for a while also has a key. If she's passing when we're out she will pop in and say 'hello' to Eva and let her in the garden.

I have the keys of DSs tenant , he lockshimself out regularly , yesterday he slammed the door , locking car keys inside , but it was 5 am ! He took his dads car , thought it was better waking him than me .

Aggie - it's a horrible feeling when you realise you've locked yourself out, but I'm glad he didn't wake you at 5 am.

The only person who has a key is DD and we have theirs.

Both DDs have a set for here and we have theirs, and my friend a few doors away, we feed each other’s cat and so we keep a set of each other’s keys.
I have a friend who doesn’t give keys to anyone, not even family. I hope they never have an emergency!

My local DS has a set and I have a set well hidden in the shed. One night I came home from Pilates in the dark and had forgotten my keys. No response to my knocking and bell ringing from OH.I knew his phone was off so I had to scrabble over numerous obstacles ( our shed is not the tidiest) to rummage around in the dark to my well hidden spare keys.
Whenever we go away I leave a set with neighbour so she can rescue post from porch etc.

This topic reminded me that I put a set of keys in a jar and buried it in the front garden marking the spot with a stone. I can’t remember now if I did this since we moved here or not! Finding out would mean digging up the whole garden so I guess I’ll never know. In years to come someone will find them and wonder how they got there!

We’ve got a bowl of unclaimed keys that we’ve acquired over the years. I worry that if we bin them someone will ask for them back.

DD1 has a set of our keys that we’ve had to use a couple of times and we have a set of hers that she’s used once.

DDs have a key for our house but we don't have one of theirs. When we go away on hols we put a spare key in an envelope with contact details which we leave with our next door neighbour.

Shem you made me smile. Pity you don't know a metal detectorist.😂

Qwerty - I think it must be a good reassurance for your neighbour over the road to know you have her keys in case of emergency.

A funny story... the friend who lives a few doors away (cat feeding buddy) and I share the same cleaning fairy. I had a frantic call from CF a few weeks ago, my pal had gone out and obviously had her mind on other things as she had well and truly locked CF in the house! What a good job we were in. 😂
