It's funny how these food variations occur in different parts of the country.
My mum spent several years in Yorkshire as a child and she said they always had their Yorkshire pudding first, with gravy, filling up before the meat. We only ever had Yorkshire puds with beef, and of course toad in the hole.
Yes, cheese with fruit cake and apple pie is essential - especially fruit cake. Wensleydale cheese or Sage Derby - although you don't see that in the shops often now.
When I first met my OH I was bemused by Sunday tea. In our house it was ham salad, tinned fruit with evaporated milk and bread and butter, followed by cake, all served with cups of tea. That's what most of the people I knew had - or perhaps sandwiches in stead of salad, especially in the winter when lettuce was unheard of! I was really surprised that at OH's Sunday tea was bread and butter, cheese and jam (often on the same piece of bread) and cake. Cheese and jam together seemed really odd and for months I only had jam, but actually it's not bad! It was also very early because FIL had to rush off for Evensong at 6 or 6.30.

I have never had apple pie with cheese, I must try it!
We had the sort of Sunday tea you had, Daisy. My mum ate bread and butter with her tinned fruit and evaporated milk, dad and I didn't and I always thought it weird“A grandchild fills a space in your heart that you never knew was empty.” – Unknown

We toasted both bread & chestnuts on the coal fire on a long pronged fork. Saturday tea was spam salad with yucky salad cream. Then tinned fruit salad with bread & butter. The evening was my best food as we had a bag of cheese & onion crisps & pop. Cheese & Christmas cake was a tradition & so was jam & cheese. Still can't beat Yorks puds tho'."Good friends help you to find important things when you have lost them....your smile, your hope, and your courage."
