    Inherited Regional Dishes.

Carrying on from Oma's dialect topic, how about regional dishes? Since I married a Northener we have adopted apple sauce with Chicken, cheese with fruit cake, seasoned (as in left over stuffing) gravy with cold poultry, all eaten regularly in our south eastern family now.
Women are like tea bags; you never know how strong they are until they are put in hot water.

I was brought up with cheese on fruitcake. Now most members of hubby's family eat it that way.
We don't have apple sauce with chicken though. If we are having cold meat with chips, hubby likes gravy on.
Sometimes I forget to like posts, but that doesn't mean I don't like them.

        Well done GM

My mum still likes to tell the story of my ex husbands (a southerner) face, when she first presented him with Christmas cake and cheese! He grew to love it, and all things Yorkshire and wouldn't consider moving back South now.

PS, never heard of apple sauce with chicken

I like fried black pudding but never had it in a sandwich! Chips with gravy sounds tasty too. Our local fish and chip shop is now selling battered and deep fried Mars bars and Jaffa cakes. I cannot imagine how unwell I would feel after eating either of those!😝

GM, I have heard of deep fried Mars Bars, and Cadburys Creme eggs! This was in Glasgow. DD1 lived there for a few years, but never sampled either.

Stop it, you're making me feel hungry 😃

When we went round to some friends for tea and she offered us fruit cake and cheese I really thought she'd lost the plot but it turned out to be very nice. She explained that's how you eat in in Yorkshire, she's a Yorkshire gal

I grew up in the East End so it was Pie Mash and Liquor (parsley sauce) and stewed eels - sometimes all on the same plate. Also jellied eels, saveloys with peas pudding, salt beef served hot or cold - my Dad used to salt his own meat by soaking in some strong brine for what seemed like ages. There is still a pie and mash shop in the High Street where I grew up. Not many left now though.

Bacon with tinned tomatoes is really nice (must have brown sauce with it of course). I guess the bacon and leek idea is a good one - a bit like the taste of pea and ham soup really.

Oma, my mum used to give us bacon and tinned tomatoes too, cooked in the frying pan.

Ma in Law used to make a mixture of tomatoes and cheese to go on toast and then under the grill. It was delicious.

I've never heard of chicken with apple sauce either, but my DIL2 (a southerner) likes Yorkshire puds with any roast meat.

I still make tinned tomatoes on toast if I'm in on my own for dinner. Also I remember sugar pieces (butties), which I really couldn't eat now.

My MIL always used to do bread and butter with cheese and jam, followed by fruit cake for Sunday tea. That was in north Wales.

Tomatoes on toast, lovely. We used to have sugar butties and my favourite condensed milk sandwiches! Went to a birthday party when I was about 5 and told my Mum I'd had white jam
