I am a big fan of aqua aerobics/aquafit (the same thing!)
I have been going to classes since my 40's. Sometimes regularly sometimes with several years gap!
I have been going to the current venue for about 4 years now. I started with once week, then increased to two or three to build up my leg muscles in readiness for my knee replacement. After that 7 weeks off, then one class a week gradually increasing to two and now three. This week I went four times, but that won't be the norm.
I have off peak senior membership so I can go as many classes or swimming sessions as I like for no extra charge.
Aqua exercises are best done in chest height water. There are however deep water classes. which as the name suggests are performed at the deep end! These use different muscles, and techniques to the other classes, where most exercises involve the floor.
You have some sort of flotation device to keep you afloat. Our centre has foam belt type things which have straps and a clip to fasten.
Yesterday our regular Monday morning instructor, C, started a new Sunday afternoon deep water class at our pool. She has been teaching them in other places for a long time.
I decided to give it a go.
It was hard work and very funny! It was new class but the majority of the people there were regulars at C's class at another pool. The rest of us regular users of the other aqua classes at this pool. The regulars knew what they were doing. We did not!
Staying in your 'place' is a big challenge. I often ended up almost touching the person in front of me a couple of times, when there had originally been several feet between us
My legs are strong from all the other aqua, my core muscles are not, and that's what's needed for this class. If I continue hopefully they will tone up a bit! Deep water exercise uses different muscles and concentrates on the core. You do work the core in regular aquafit, but much more in this kind.
Despite Lizzie and the instructor telling us the belt had to be tight, I don't think mine was tight enough, because it ended up almost like a cushion behind my shoulders !! I will tighten it much more next time. Some people have their own and if I make this class a regular one I will probably buy one.
I didn't like not being good at it, but it's early days, and hopefully one day I may find it as easy as the other classes. We shall see. I do enjoy being in the deep water and my core needs the work and my knees need the rest, so I will persevere
I will definitely try this class again, but can't go next Sunday.
