    Dry socket

If you have ever suffered from this painful condition you will sympathise.

I had an extraction at my dentist on Monday and today I started with the symptoms of dry socket. It is when the vital blood clot which protects the socket is lost. I always follow all after care instructions, some people are just prone to it. The dentist warned me I was likely to have it as I had before. The nerves and bone which the clot should protect become exposed and painful.

So I have pain and now a red cheek, which I remember from last time

My dentists are closed until Tuesday. We have tried all day to get through, via NHS 111 to the emergency dental department. Most times I was 46 or 47th in the queue! Eventually this afternoon it was 11th so we stuck with it
I now have an appointment tomorrow afternoon in Hull, an hour's drive away.

Hope your appointment goes well Gem.

We were talking to a couple we know, who live in the next street.
They got their appointments today, for their second jab, in Scarborough on Monday.
If the weather was a good forecast for Monday, they would have gone and made a day of it.
They refused the appointment, and got one for next Friday, a lot nearer home.
Sometimes I forget to like posts, but that doesn't mean I don't like them.

Poor you Gem. Glad to hear you have an appointment tomorrow. I do hope you are able to suck your Easter egg on Sunday at least!

Gem, I've never heard of a dry socket before (aren't I the lucky one!) but it sounds horrendous. I hope you can deaden the pain enough to sleep tonight and hopefully tomorrow will bring some relief, even though it's a long journey. Sending hugs. xxx

From what you were saying Gemini, it did seem to be developing into a dry socket. Hope they can put things right at your appt. tomorrow .

                              Thanks Daisy

It was like a dental version of speed dating!
In the chair, briefly explain, quick exam. She cheered me up by telling me the back tooth, next to the missing one is decayed and needs to come out! I will discuss this with my dentist next week. She prescribed antibiotics, almost threw some stuff into the cavity and I was out! Presumably they want to fit in as many emergency patients as possible, but it felt a bit like a conveyer belt and I was unsure she had done it properly. She had a very strong foreign accent as well so it was hard to get all she said. However, I now think she did treat it properly, if rapidly, as it took the pain away over the next few hours.
