B has a mesh repair that lasted about 8 years , he has had several Hernia repairs done all lasted a long time ,
He needs another done but because of previous scar tissue they cant do keyhole it will have to be quite a big op , its not causing any trouble at the minute so he has decided not to have the op he's had enough of hospitals . Its in his groin this one and he can pop it back in if it comes out , this is the mesh one .

Don't let them scare you they always give the worst scenario they have to - to cover their own backs
Some people are prone to them , like B my FIL had several done , if its causing pain have it done xx

They do give you the worst scenario Nana, just as they warn you you could lose an eye when have a cataract op!

In the end I suppose all you can do is weigh up the risks with how much pain or discomfort it causes you.
My friend had one done a couple of years ago and hasn't regretted it.

Thank you everyone. This hernia is just above my navel but started off about 4" above this recent one. DD & OH think I should have it done. It's good to hear success stories.

I've had one hernia repair done a few yrs ago whilst awake, which was open surgery. The other I was put to sleep & had open surgery. If I decide to have this one done it will also be open surgery, but asleep. All are abdominal hernias.

        Thanks for your advice.x

Thanks for your encouraging words Nan2. I'll be glad when the appointment's over. Same specialist. I put in my original post that he was caring & thorough, but he still put the heebie-jeebies up me, as they say.

Good luck with your appointment Nana. I especially liked your comment about being like a car. Wouldn’t life be so much easier? I could do with a new bonnet and a respray!

Thanks. You do make me smile. I like your sense of humour. I wonder what the other Grans would choose to have done at their MOT?😉

My appointment went well. It was a consultant I've seen about three times now & not the one on the letter. I was glad as he's lovely. We talked about it thoroughly & decided to leave it until I'm sorted with my meds etc. He said that an operation is necessary but not to think about it just now.

He'll send me an appointment to see him again but not when. This is because he thinks the main thing to do is to put it out of my mind & get in a better place where I can feel comfortable with my decision to go ahead with the op'.

As I left I went to shake his hand thanking him but he gave me a hug instead. What a lovely humble human being.

Nice doctor! Take his advice and don't think about it for now.

Nana - your doctor is obviously very experienced and is looking at you as a person, not just "a hernia repair". It makes sense to wait until your meds are sorted and settled and you yourself are feeling stronger. I think some doctors just seem to look at the 'mechanics' and not the whole person with emotions, worries and other health concerns.

How lovely to give you a hug - that says it all, doesn't it. I'm sending you a hug as well. xxx

Ooooh lovely man. I have yet to meet a consultant who doesn’t think he’s God! (To be fair I haven’t met many) Are you happy with the outcome Nana? That’s the main thing.

I am Grauntie. In fact I got another appointment for the end of May today. I wish he could do the operation but he said I saw the other consultant as he is the top man when it comes to repeat hernias.

Thanks for the hugs & kind comments everyone.x
