Daisy-Yes he always says he was glad to get away! My two sisters-in-law and MIL all worked in the Potteries. Mainly office work for SILs but MIL used to put handles on cups.
I'm revisiting this thread in light of my meal in a London restaurant over the weekend.
We had a nice meal with friends who are over from New York.
OH and I both chose Shepherds Pie, It came in a small enamel dish (OH described it as a dog bowl!) This meant the food was extremely hot. You couldn't take it out of the dish and put it onto your plate to cool, as it was on a board. Along with the cabbage. There was a jug of gravy on the board too. How you were expected to use this gravy is a puzzle! The boards did at least look very clean and in good condition I must say. It wasn't easy eating the cabbage off the board and it kept going underneath the dish!
Onto dessert. Two people chose Eton Mess , which actually came in proper bowls. Lucky them. My trifle came in a small Kilner style jar, with an open lid, which was tricky to eat from. This was set on a board.
I find all this so annoying, impractical and pretentious!!!

I would have to return said meal to the kitchen and demand a plate there is no way a wooden board or slate can be hygienic imo.Nothing can beat white serving dishes on a restaurant table.
There will come a time when we book a table for a meal the check list before leaving the house will be
” Handbag “
“ Check “
” Purse “
” Check “
” Money “
“Check”
” Soup bowl “
“ Check “
”Dinner plate “
” Check”
“ Dessert bowl “
“Check “

I have a funny slightly related story.
A couple of years ago a group of us were eating in our favourite Chinese restaurant. When they started out chopsticks were the norm and people, like me, who can't use them asked for a fork. Over the years they realised that this was the wrong way round for the area! Chopsticks are still freely available but regular cutlery is set out.
The same applies to those little round bowls. They were the norm, if you preferred a plate you only had to ask. Then plates were what you got for most dishes.
On to the night in question, OH asked for a bowl and chopsticks, which were duly brought. When the food arrived it turned out that OH's were some form of pork chop. Imagine trying to eat this from a small bowl, with chopsticks
The group still bring this up from time and it always causes hilarity!

Gem - it's called 'giving the customers what they want' - a variation on the theme 'the customer is always right'!!! I have a lovely mental picture of your OH eating chops with chop-sticks - it seems very appropriate, somehow!!!
