    Eating Out

Tonight we went to a Turkish restaurant recommended by DD1. The food was not remotely Turkish and very expensive. The waiting staff were excellent, and when our waitress asked how we enjoyed our meal, for the first time ever I told the truth, I was so disappointed. I spent some time living with a Turkish family In Istanbul in my youth so I still have some idea as to how it should taste. Every plate came out of the kitchen looking exactly the same apart from the meat/fish. Obviously it is aimed at the passing trade from the nearby station. Our waitress agreed with my comments, she was Rumanian!
The only other time I have complained (my steak tasted of fish!) we could hear the smashing of plates and shouting from the kitchen in the dining area!
Was it worth it? Probably not. The good people of my part of Essex won’t know any different. I just dread to think of what would have happened if I’d asked for Turkish coffee!

Grauntie - how disappointing, but good for you for speaking out. I suppose it's the same with a lot of 'foreign' restaurants - they dilute their traditional cuisine to fit in with the customers who don't really know what it should be like. Did you get Turkish Delight, though?

BTW, may I ask what you were doing in Instanbul in your youth - I think my imagination may be running overtime. xx

Grauntie that’s a shame. It’s disappointing when food turns turns out to be bland and boring. I’ve never had Turkish food - I personally love Italian and have had a few unauthentic Italian meals in my time. I’m with you re complaining. If you don’t complain things don’t improve. Love to hear tales of your youth in Istanbul 😀

No Turkish Delight and it’s my favourite treat! Even the music was Motown on a loop!
I answered an add in The Lady (remember that mag?) for a position as a mother’s help. I had no experience of children whatsoever! The family was a real eye opener, the children were the worst behaved I had ever met. It’s a long story, but I loved Turkey.

That's fascinating Grauntie! That's the sort of thing I thought of doing in my youth but never did.

How disappointing about the restaurant though.
We should complain if we are not satisfied. I'm not good at that. OH is much more likely to complain. One of her bugbears is hot drinks which are not hot. I have lost count of the number of coffees and hot chocolates she has sent back!!

Nanto - I love trying new foods, but OH is much more likely to choose something he recognises. I've never tried Turkish, though, so sadly I wouldn't know whether what Grauntie had was authentic or not.

I'll send food back if it's really awful but if it's edible but not good I'll put up with it and never go back there!

Oh Grauntie what a shame , we were at our local Turkish restaurant last week its amazing , they do such rich and varied dishes , lots of spices such as Sumack etc all the flavours we have tasted in Turkey ,
I think your right to complain , if no one does then they will think its acceptable to serve rubbish , and we get a plate of home made Turkish delight at the end , B doesnt like it so i always put his bits in a tissue and bring it home

I have never had Turkish food, I don't know if there is one near me. I love authentic Turkish delight. I will send food back if it is served on a cold plate and if the food isn't hot. something that bugs me is not having a spoon and fork for my sweet.

Oma - you could have my Turkish Delight too, and OH's. Neither of us like it, although I expect proper authentic TD is much nicer than the ordinary UK versions.

                          I have a box every Christmas.😋
OH is still in a strop about it. We used to eat at Efes in the West End when we went up to town. That was a really good Turkish restaurant run by Turkish people.
Oh well, beef casserole tonight. 🙄

I would love to try authentic Turkish delights. I’ve only ever had Cadbury. 😋
