    Unfair or justified?

At my GS ‘s school they hold a House drama competition. Children can get together and make up little dramatic pieces to perform to gain House points.GS was most upset because the one boy who was willing to do something with him decided to pull out. Anyway DD suggested he perform on his own the act he did for the village showcase night, called Twisted Tales where GS told jokes, some of his own making.
Anyway it all went well and Finn won the Monologue category. Afterwards DD was told on the quiet by someone she knows who was one of the judges that he come first in another category but they thought they should give the award to someone else as F had already won one category and they felt they should give someone else the honour.

Of course as his Nana I felt this was unfair but I suppose I can see the other side of the argument if I was the GM of the declared winner.

What do you ladies think? Is it on a par with the Sports days when the children compete in teams etc.so there is no individual victory to make less able children upst.?

I do think it is unfair Clover.
If he was judged best then he was best.
They don't use the judges method at the Oscars or the Olympics do they? "No, sorry that is too many awards or Gold medals, let's give it to someone else"!

I would be annoyed if it were my GC.

I think it’s totally unfair he won both fair and square, if it was a sport he was in say a couple of races he could win both , they don’t stop the person from getting a trophy because he’s already won one , you just have to live with the fact you KNOW he was the best in both categories. Well done young man 🏆🏆🥇🥇

Me too. If he deserved the award then it should be his. It would have been better if the judge had said nothing, he/she obviously didn’t agree with the decision. The only way round that situation in the future would be to declare one award per contestant at the beginning, although that isn’t fair either in my opinion. If a contestant shines, he/she deserves to win.

I agree its unfair. If a child has done their very best in any aspect of their school work and they have excelled above other pupils they should be acknowledged otherwise they may stop putting their very best into the work set by teachers.

Totally unfair. He won,so he should have got the award.

I agree it’s unfair however, I think the judge or whoever it was, was completely in the wrong to say anything. Not a very good judge in my opinion, why upset people. But well done to him for his prize, enjoy his achievement x

Thank you ladies. You’re right, it was only his Mum who knew. He was pleased anyway as his House came top.

Clover, I think it is actually dishonest to tell one child he’s won when he hasn’t, at the same time denying another child the recognition he has earned.

This is bad bad on all levels, but even more so since F probably needs all the boosts to his self-esteem that he is entitled to.

As as for the “judge” words fail me.

I totally agree with everything said it is so unfair, your poor DD can't even raise the topic without bringing bad feeling towards the judge who has definatly spoken out of turn, you know your DGS is a superstar and well done to him xx

Very unfair, if he was the best he should receive the prize. Perhaps this is the one contest he is good at. Other children can win many races on Sports Day.

If a child had won both the 100 metres and the long jump would that be unfair? I wonder who the judges were, clearly they had not thought this through and the one who knew and told your DD was beyond unprofessional.

It does seem unfair on GS Clover. If he came first in more than one section then he should have been awarded the prize/s.
I do think it was very wrong of the person who told your DD though. Even if they were unhappy about it, they should have taken their thoughts to the organisers, not the parents.
