    Herbert

I first made the acquaintance of Herbert over two years ago. He was introduced to me by our son-in-law who explained his many virtues and attributes. He’s ‘fairly’ unobtrusive, lives on a wall and is the gift that keeps on giving. The gifts take the form of a year round supply of herbs, lollo rosso, frisée, rocket, chicory, lambs lettuce .... you get the idea. And all you have to do, is keep him supplied with seeds and water.

Now this Herbert has been languishing in their storage shed and very sad he’s been. No chance to display his talents and was feeling unloved. However, he has now been rescued, installed in pride of place in his, and their, new home and is giving his all.

So impressed was I, that I ordered a companion for my DH who had been giving him longing looks.

All went well, Herbert #2 is made in Austria but was happy to join his companion in Britain. Until - yet another consequence of Brexit struck. Herbert’s new dad received a demand for £66 in import duty. And another £50 carriage as we’re not in the EU.

That’s a lot of money on top of what he cost. Even if we are spared for a fair few years longer, I doubt that we shall consume sufficient greenstuff to cover his cost.

Anyway, I paid that (had no choice as I’d already paid for Herbert) and waited all day for Herbert to arrive. No show. I will spare you the details of dealing with DHL but suffice it say that it took three hours to make contact with this dreadful company with the telephone bill increasing by the minute. The almost brain dead person at the other end had no explanation but has said it will arrive on Monday. So - another wasted day stuck indoors.

And if my blood pressure carries me off shortly I can only console myself by knowing that DD and SiL will have a brother for their Herbert. They will have to rename him Grünbert.

Sum, a friend of mine has his own ship parts import business in Scotland, he has the same problems since the brexit, so expensive for postage and import etc that he is seriously thinking of stopping. He certainly has lost his faith in DHL!

I have never heard of "Herbert", I will have a look on Google.

Sum1 - how frustrating, infuriating, not to say expensive. Herbert2 will have to perform very well to earn his keep.

DHL seem to have lost the plot!

There doesn't seem any logic in all these problems companies say they're having. We've received three items from Germany/Belgium and Denmark recently and all have arrived very promptly, no problem, two of them within 3 days and the other within 5 days, which is the norm for that company. No extra carriage charges or import duty.

I shall be very interested in how Herbert2 performs, once he arrives.

Sum1 - he looks very interesting. What are the white shelves (?) made of?

Many years ago I remember seeing a hydroponics system on an industrial scale at the Epcot Centre in Florida, and thought it was fascinating.

I also though Sum1's family had decided to name their system Herbert - rather like a pet name!

Update. OH lost his cool with DHL as I’m afraid as they could find no trace... Anyway, he resolved to get back on the case Sunday evening after we got back from our walk.
We got home at about 5.30 and our neighbour knocked with - Herbert!
Suspect that T’s vexation had galvanised them into action. So - he’s residing in the conservatory ready to be installed and we await results. Hopefully by mid January we should have all the salad we shall ever need.
I’ll post a photo if it all works out. We lost all our salads in the raised bed to slugs this year. I don’t think they will be able to get at Herbert.

                            Sum1, hooray, Herbert at last!.
Here's to lots of nice slug free salads.

Sum1 - hurray for Herbert. I'm so glad he's finally arrived, despite DHL's "best" efforts! I shall look forward to seeing pictures of the produce. Just think - not only will you have super-fresh salads in January you won't have to examine them minutely in cold water to find those pesky slugs.

                              Enjoy.
