Spring 2019 - the new gardening season

I'm sure across the length and breadth of the land there are optimistic vegetable growers chitting their seed potatoes this week-end.

Two of them - Mimi and me - are right here.

This year I've only got 4 varieties - Pentland Javelin, Maris Bard, Shetland Black and Sarpo Mira. I'll probably weaken and get some Anya and Red Rooster.

I'm always like a kid in a sweet shop choosing potato varieties (sad, I know!), but there are soooo many to choose from, and for me that's the big advantage of growing them - you're not stuck with the same old same old kinds in the supermarkets.

If anyone's interested there's actually a database of potato varieties, and I think it makes fascinating reading. (Even sadder!)

Mimi - that's nearly as excited as I got when I saw the "oily fish' in the dog food order was sprats - Eva's favourite!! What are we like!!

OH is thinking about making a small raised bed for growing a few veg. Not sure if it will actually materialise. The spring flower bulbs are still waiting to be planted. 😩

A friend (of years past) grew vegetables of different colours. Funnily enough I never fancied them. Couldn't seem to get my brain & taste buds round them.

My OH used to grow about 3 varieties every year, I can only remember Arran Pilot because it was resistant to scab.

Oops sorry ....predictive txt. I meant 'Chitting' not 'Chatting'. Mind you I suppose you can chat while you chit.😄

Nana - there's nothing better than chatting while you're chitting!

No room for spuds here and no plot now. I shall look forward to onions, garlic and tomatoes. I have a good amount of self seeded sweet peas from last year’s plants growing on my patch though. 😁

I love sweet peas too, but didn't grow any last year. I must get some seeds.

I always save seeds from last season and add a packet of mixed. Usually plant November and again in spring.
