    The Reluctant Gardener

An interesting day in the Daisy house - or rather in the garden! OH hates gardening but knows I need some help with certain jobs. Two of 'his' jobs have been waiting ages - pruning down a huge Photinia Red Robin and pressure washing the patio. We were going to do the overgrown shrub over a year ago when OH's brother was here and could help. But that day was the hottest of the year so we left it. Today OH decided to do the job more or less on his own! I shouted instructions 'No, not that one, the one to the left' etc. It took ages!

With visitors coming on Tuesday, the patio needed a tidy up. About 3 or 4 years ago I asked OH if he'd pressure wash it for me. I have reminded him about this on and off and it's usually met with 'just say what you want doing, and I'll do it', which is rapidly followed by 'not today I've got to do x, y or z'. I think he finally realised it was looking very sad and neglected so today he started the job!!!

We remembered late on that DS2 has an attachment for his Karcher for cleaning patios which makes the job much quicker and easier, so tomorrow we'll borrow that and hope to get the job finished!

OH may not like gardening, but he's a bit of a tinker when he gets his hands on the pruning shears. He thought it would be a good time to prune a climbing rose in full flower today, but didn't notice a lilac that needs dead heading!

It felt a bit like having Cooper the puppy in the garden - there's no real harm in him, but you do have to keep an eye on him because you never know what he'll do next, bless him.

Libra - I agree with B - there's a time and a place for pruning everything, and my OH, lovely as he is, doesn't look at it from the plant's point of view!

My OH was not allowed to cut the flowers and shrubs, he always cut too hard back so you didn't have flowers the following year. He was an amazing veg. gardener although I always grew the plants for him in the greenhouse.

When I have a pair of secauters in my hands hubby calls "watch out desert storm is on the loose" he has never let me forget I trimmed down a bush in the garden of the family house 20+ yrs ago.
He has sole control of the gardens now and is doing a really good job with his veg garden and lovely planters/hanging baskets.

My DH is the same....give him the secateurs and he goes mad. He is banned from touching the roses, wisteria, clematis etc. Last year my hollyhock was growing beautifully and I went into the garden to find he had cut it down to the ground!! He said....there were too many leaves on it šŸ¤ØšŸ˜±. He even managed to kill a fully grown rosemary shrub that was doing fine until he got his mitts on it. However, he is very good at the heavy work and never minds when I get some mad idea in my head, so I really mustnā€™t grumble. šŸ™‚

Enfys, my rosemary bush and I live in fear of OH approaching within half a mile of it with secateurs in his hand. Yes, it is big and makes it hard to get round the back of the greenhouse, but so does the pile of wood he's craftily dumped (sorry, stored) round the other side! I love my rosemary bush! I'll tell him what your OH did. What a pity, your beautiful hollyhock! You expect attacks from the slugs but not from OHs!

Glamm - at least your garden is in safe hands.

Plant - that sounds like a good division of skills and labour.

Grauntie - thank you - I can see you understand.

Nanto, yes, "tries" or "trying" is about right.

Oma - it is NOT funny!!! Well, it IS funny, but sometimes I have a sense of humour failure!

Daisy, the hollyhock is doing really well this year...maybe its drastic haircut did it good....but Iā€™d never say that to DH šŸ™‚

Enfys - hide the secateurs just in case!!!

Didn't realise I was not alone in feeling nervous when OH had his secateurs in his hand.

Daisy how do you dehead a lilac tree? Ours needs doing. I learnt how to dead head roses the other night as OH was doing the usual channel flicking thing & I just stopped him in time to see Monty dead heading some roses. At least now I have nurtured Mum's standard rose into bloom. 13 flowers this yr compared to 4 last year. Smells beautiful too.

Nana - well done on doing the right thing by your roses.

As far as dead heading lilacs go - as far as I know you get a pair of secateurs or scissors and cut the dead flower heads off! I like to do it because they look horrible once they've faded!
